Community Love

We are squeezing a lot into these last few weeks of school! We have 13 school days left, and I am excited for the end of year activities. Please take a look at our calendar and mark yours :).

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. It is also Mental Health Awareness month. I have included some resources for you to explore as a family below as we celebrate our AAPI community and attend to the mental health of our students and ourselves.

There have been a ton of fabulous events these past two weeks! Please enjoy the pictures from our Spring Fling, Tree Planting, School Lunch Hero Cape Day, May the 4th Be With You, and Surprise Staff vs. Kids Kickball Game. So much fun :).

This Wednesday, we are celebrating our very own Elbra Beitsayad, Siew Kye Ong, and Jay Gluckman at the PTAC Honorary Service Award Evening for their incredible PTA work for our Ohlone students, families and staff. Well-deserved recognition!

I look forward to seeing everyone next week!

If you haven't come out yet, now is the time! Please take an hour out of your Saturday to take care of our farm and outdoor classroom. The weather is beautiful and you will get to hang out with fellow parents and bring your Ohlone students. We hope to see our regulars and newbies as well!

No experience necessary! Sign up for any amount of time you can give. We need 40+ parents to help. Sign up here!

School Mascot

Staff and students are interested in creating a new mascot or breathing new life into the apple. If you have an idea you would like to share, please complete the Google form below by Tuesday, 5/17.

Student Council will be discussing ideas received from students, staff, and parents at our Wednesday meeting. We are asking all submissions to include the meaning behind the mascot suggestion as it relates to Ohlone. Thank you!

Middle School Shout Out

Related to our efforts toward building representative literature, I was thrilled to hear about the new 8th grade core literature adoption of They Called Us Enemy, a new graphic novel/memoir reflecting on the personal Japanese Internment Camp experience of George Takei’s family.

They Called Us Enemy was piloted by approximately 800 eighth-graders at Fletcher, Greene, and JLS Middle Schools. A post piloting survey showed 85% of students thought the book was good, very good, or excellent. It was chosen by the committee because it represented a new historical perspective for students and increased access to all reading levels.

The Supplemental List for 8th grade is also exciting! Take a peek :):
