Text Evidence
“He didn’t answer so I gently lifted his head. He toppled backward onto the earth. He had been bleeding from the mouth, and his neck and the front of his shirt were stained a brilliant red,”(Hurst).
This quote shows what happened to Doodle when he was left behind. It is foreshadowing that he might be dead. His brother had a very strong love for Doodle. He taught him how to walk, and was beginning to teach him how to run. Him and his brother went in to the forest, but a storm hit. The storm got worse and trees started falling down. His brother started running while Doodle was left behind. When he went back he saw Doodle, and what had happened to him.
It was in the clove of seasons, summer was dead but autumn had not been born, that the ibis lit in the bleeding tree."
This quote is an example of foreshadowing. This sentence shows that the story is going to be tragic. The color red often makes people think of death, and there are many words in this quote that bring us to the color red, such as a clove which is a red flower. It also mentions summer being dead, which again foreshadows the sad ending of the story.Interpretation
Assessment
"After that, Doodle and I often went down to Old Woman Swamp"
Is the quote above foreshadowing? Why or why not?
This is not foreshadowing because it is not implying that anything will happen. Whenever it is foreshadowing, it implies that something else will happen in the future. However in this part, this is just making a simple statement.
