Staffing Term Two

I wish to notify you of some staff changes for term two. Mr Noseda will be taking long service leave and his replacement will be Miss Emily Rasmussen who currently works at St Anthony’s, Greenmount.


I will also be taking long service leave for term two and my replacement as Principal will be Mrs Maura Killalea with Mrs Sarah Williams and Mr Justin Kirry being the Assistant Principals. Mrs Mel Knight will be taking over Mrs Horne’s role as Learning Support Coordinator from term two.


I have currently advertised for a Grounds/Maintenance person along with an additional EA and a School Nurse. I will announce these appointments (if we receive suitable applicants) in the coming weeks. To view these advertised positions please click here.


Evening on the Green

Tomorrow is our school community event for term one. This has been a longstanding tradition like many schools to have an event where families come together. Even though the Fathering Group have their event the following Friday, tomorrow evening is a family affair. It would be wonderful to see our families in the school grassed and undercover area enjoying each other’s company, keeping in mind the current social distancing requirements. Alana Metaxas has been working incredibly hard in coordinating this event for our school so we do hope to see you there!


Swimming Carnival

Congratulations to all the children who participated in last weeks carnival. Well done, to O'Connor House for winning the Perpetual Trophy this year. Thank you to all staff and parents who helped out on the day and a special thank you to Mr Noseda for organising the carnival. A great day was had by all.


Paint Me A Rainbow to Bring Colour to Autism Awareness

Autism is a difference, a different way of thinking and that sometimes the message to the brain takes a different and perhaps longer way to reach the brain. This year at St Luke’s, we have once again chosen to highlight the 'super powers' of autism and also mention some of the 'frustrations'.


One of our EAs in Kindy, Mrs Kylie Beveridge, who is the Director/Founder of ‘Paint Me A Rainbow’ wishes to bring colour to autism awareness and to draw parents and teachers attention to the Facebook page:

Paint Me A Rainbow in 2019 helped St Luke’s School create a BrightStart Programme in the hall and Sensory Room for students who have autism, anxiety or sensory needs to help with their daily self-regulation or for those who need a safe space. With regards to the Sensory Room being created, there are so many proven benefits for all children to use these rooms (not just children with an autism diagnosis). The room can be a safe, calming quiet space where a child can go with supervision for a 'brain break'. Within the room there are different 'sensory' tools and toys, including therapy putty, night lightening, a beanbag, desk for drawing/colouring in and lots of fidget toys. Fidget toys are used to allow the child to calm themselves and learn how to self-regulate.


Another point Kylie would like to mention is that currently there is 1 child in 70 that has an autism diagnosis. So if your own child isn’t that one, the chances are a loved one or friend will one day have an autism diagnosis. The sensory room has been of great benefit to teachers and other students, and has assisted with less melt downs within the classroom environment.


The campaign at St Luke’s will starts on Monday, 22 March, which marks the start of World Autism Month, and aims to raise funds for the participating schools to help students with an autism diagnosis.


Paint Me A Rainbow will be visiting our school next Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday each morning from 8am - 9am selling rainbow campaign merchandise in the undercover area. There will be a lolly jar guessing competition and also a colouring in competition. We will draw the 'winners' at Friday’s assembly. All money raised will go to purchasing more equipment for BrightStart and our Sensory Room.


Parent Interviews will be held in week nine of this term. Our school will be closing early at 12.00 pm on Monday, 29 March to help facilitate these meetings. Information about how to book an interview time will be available from this Friday afternoon. We will send you all a link to access the booking sheet. I encourage parents to select a time and meet with their child’s teacher to discuss your child’s progress if you haven’t already met in the past few weeks. It is very important that parents make time to meet with the class teacher to ensure the school and home continue the important partnership of jointly working together for the well-being of the child. The only way we can do this is by talking together, working together and consistently supporting the children to grow in their love of learning and in their love of life. I ask you to ensure that you are working in partnership with your class teacher for the well-being and development of your child. If any child cannot be picked up by 12pm, we will have designated areas where children will be supervised by specialist teaching staff. You are very welcome to collect your child after your interview time if it is before 2.55pm, then normal pick-up time will occur.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS

On Wednesday, 31 March, we will be walking through the journey of Jesus before his crucifixion.


These will take place on the school grounds as each class has been very busy designing and creating a cross that depicts each station.


These cross stations will be permanently fixed onto the school grounds so staff and students can use them as reflections during the school year.


We will begin each session in the school hall.


8.45am – 9.20am: PP & Yr 1

9.30am – 10.40am: Yr 2 & 3

11.15am – 12.20pm: Yr 4 & 5

1.00pm – 2.30pm: Yr 6, plus parents and Parishioners


Parents are invited to any of the sessions. Each session will be repeated to suit the needs of the students. We look forward to seeing you there. Please wear comfortable shoes.

SUSTAINABILITY

Evening on the Green Plant Stall – we will be having a plant stall at the P&F Evening on the Green. If anyone has any plants to donate, then please bring them to the Science Room. All donations are gratefully accepted. Thank you to the families who have already brought in some plants.

Evening on the Green Containers for Change – at the P&F Evening on the Green we will be collecting any plastic water containers/soft drink cans that might have been thrown away in the past for our Containers for Change bin. This is always happy for donations and can be found outside the Library next to the recycling bins.

VISUAL ART - YEAR 4

The students in Years 4 to 6 have recently participated in a Joondalup Art Project created by artist Sean Adamas. This involved the painting of over 100 lily pads for a floating artwork installation that will be showcased as part of the LUMI NIGHT EVENT. This is a free family-friendly event set to transform Joondalup Central Park from 26th to the 28th of March, 2021. There will be 2 sessions per night 6 to 8 pm and 8.30 to 10.30pm. This free event includes an interactive maze, silent disco, Zap Circus, musicians, light art displays and food trucks. Sounds like a fabulous night to spend with family and friends enjoying music, dance and art.

Welcome to week 6 families and welcome finally to the great extravaganza of Evening on the Green! A massive thanks to those year 1 parents for coordinating the night and volunteering your time to make the night so fabulous for the entire school community! If you haven’t bought your ticket no stress, tickets can still be bought at the door.

Many thanks to those families who have already returned their hot cross bun order forms – there is still loads of time to get yours in! Fresh hot cross buns will be delivered to children to bring home in the last term of school. On the Wednesday for Kindy families and on the Thursday for the rest of the school. If you’re free on the Thursday to come and help distribute the orders please get in touch with the P&F. Once again we thank Baker’s Delight Woodvale for supporting St Luke’s.

Leading into Easter families now have an opportunity to partake in the EGGstremely important Easter raffle. Tickets can be purchased near the library and are $1 each. Thank you Kindy families for donating delicious items for the raffle and for selling tickets. The raffle will be drawn on Wednesday, 31 March.

ADVERTISING

METRONET

These April school holidays METRONET will have a full-scale model on display at Yagan Square, giving people an early opportunity to see inside Perth’s new C-Series trains.

METRONET would like to invite you to share this information with your school families, to attend the free family-friendly event from Saturday, 3 April to Sunday, 18 April between 9am and 5pm.

Visitors can walk through the carriage and along with the railcar, there is a 1:50 scale model on display, and kids can get involved with a scavenger hunt.

Thursday mornings between 9am-10am are reserved for Quiet Hour, where the display will be low sensory to cater for those who prefer to experience the train in this environment.

Walk-ins will be welcome and families wanting to skip the queue will be able to register for free VIP tickets at www.metronet.wa.gov.au/all-aboard.

As the biggest railcar order in the state’s history, the METRONET Railcar Program will deliver 246 new C-series railcars to Perth’s rail network.

The trains will service an increased demand from METRONET projects and replace the A-series trains that currently operate on the Armadale/Thornlie, Fremantle and Midland lines.
