Kindergarten Explorers
Our kindergarten students ventured out this week to the Westchester Children's Museum. They had a fantastic time learning about science concepts through playing, building, and creating.
STEM Lab with Ms. Aboulenein
The STEM room is always buzzing with excitement! We just wrapped up our coding unit. Students progressed from doing "unplugged" activities to learn about computational thinking, to coding our "robot mice '' then finally, coding on iPads. We will circle back to more coding activities later in the year including using new robots! Stay tuned for more coding fun.
This week we are thinking like scientists and conducting experiments and investigations. While the students dive into science topics in the classroom, the STEM room is extending that learning with additional science opportunities.
Kindergarten is learning about animal needs. In the STEM room we learned about different habitats for animals. We then created Play-Doh animals, food, water and shelter using habitat pictures. Student described their creations and named each element.
In first grade students have been learning about seasonal patterns. We began constructing three- dimensional trees. We discussed how the earth spins as well as orbits around the sun, causing night and day as well as the change in seasons. Their 3D trees will show how our environment and trees change throughout the seasons.
In second grade, students are learning about mapping the Earth's surface and bodies of water. We created topographical models of land out of paper then made it "rain." We were able to experience how water moves from high places to low places creating rivers and collecting in the oceans.
Performing Arts with Ms. Rao
Save the Dates:
April 13th: Hawthorne students are invited to perform at the Multicultural Fair at Columbus Elementary School. The fair is from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Students will sing in Albanian, American, Hawaiian, Irish, Italian, and Spanish.
April 18th: District-wide POPS concert, 8:00 p.m.
Stay tuned for more information about performance times.
The students continue to learn new music while having fun. Students have been reading rhythm patterns and learning music terms to extend their music vocabulary. We have added: Accelerando, Bar Line, Drum, Duet, Ensemble, Measure, Solo, Time Signature, Trio, and Quartet.
We have moved on to the percussion instrument, the xylophone. We are learning how to read music on a music staff as well as do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti, do. We have met a new puppet, “Super Pete,” and he has helped students learn a little more about half notes, dotted halves, and whole notes that have a longer duration. He has helped students learn how to hold those notes longer when they sing and/or play the drum.
Enrichment classes have been learning about state landmarks and important messages in their state songs. The students are making connections between state songs regarding common lyrics, music patterns, and instrumentation.
Reminders
School Attendance
We know that the winter brings more seasonal illnesses and we do tend to have more absences during this time of year. Sometimes it is challenging to get our kids to school on these winter days after vacations and snow days. If you are experiencing a challenge with getting your child to school (unrelated to an illness), please reach out to Ms. Stern at astern@mtplcsd.org or Ms. Westfall at mwestfall@mtplcsd.org. We are here to support you.
Reporting Absences
When your child is absent, please log in to www.schooldismissalmanager.com to report the absence. Please include the absence reason. If your child is home due to illness, please indicate that in your communication. If your child is absent and the school is not notified, the school will attempt to contact you and will also send out an automated call.
