WHES Highlights

April 21, 2023

Dear WHES Families,

We have completed most of our CMAS testing for the 22-23 school year! All of our students did an amazing job whether it was our 3rd-5th graders working hard on each test and showing what they know to our Kindergarten-2nd graders supporting by walking quietly through the hallway and encouraging the older students. Thank you for supporting your students during this time and encouraging each of our students to try their best! We have just a few makeups left to conclude next week.

We are still collecting shoes for our PTA Shoe Drive fundraiser! Shoes can be dropped off anytime in the main lobby of WHES through Friday, 4/28. We will do one more show drop off event at morning arrival on April 26th! Bring your shoes and a volunteer will take them from you at your car or on the sidewalk! Ask your family members, friends, neighbors if they might have shoes to donate, too! We will pick up, if needed, reach out to the office to arrange this!

We have many upcoming end of year events - Talent Show, Book Fair, Assessment Day, Field Day, promotion celebrations, and more! Please stay tuned to family emails and the Highlights for all of the details! Please continue reading below for more information. Also, like/follow our school Facebook page - Woodmen Hills Elementary School (https://fb.me/WHESTornadoes) for more updates and the sharing of good things happening at WHES!

We are starting plans for the 23-24 school year, too! Please read more information below about the option or order school supply kits online with delivery directly to WHES this summer and/or to submit a classroom placement input form for next year.

Please be sure to continue to check the Family Handbook for complete details of all day-to-day systems and procedures. Read the information below carefully and don't hesitate to call our school office with any questions or needs at 719.495.5500.

Have a great weekend,

Bethany Stegman & Amanda Bower

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Wood at lwood@d49.org.

PTA Shoe Drive!

WHES Community,

WHES PTA is excited to launch our Shoe Drive Fundraiser to raise money for online learning programs. By donating gently worn, used and new shoes to our shoe drive, the shoes will be given a second chance and make a difference in people’s lives around the world.

All donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of micro-enterprise partners. Funds2Orgs works with micro-entrepreneurs in helping them create, maintain and grow small businesses in developing countries where economic opportunity and jobs are limited. Proceeds from the sales of the shoes collected in shoe drive fundraisers are used to feed, clothe and house their families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send her son to law school. Please check out the 2 min video to learn more about how the shoes our Tornados collect will have a positive impact on others. What is a Micro-Enterprise

What you need to know:

  • We will earn funds based on the total weight of the pairs of gently worn, used, and new shoes collected.

  • Funds2Orgs will issue us a check for the collected shoes.

  • Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used and new shoes at any of our drop off locations (WHES lobby, Woodmen Hills Rec Center East, Meridian Ranch Rec Center) or at one of our Drop of Events.

  • WHES Drop off box will be available April 4th - 28th and all Rec Center drop boxes will be available throughout Spring Break (3/18-4/3). Over Spring Break please take a moment to go through any shoes your child has outgrown or you no longer wear and set them aside to send into school with your child. Please ask your friends and family to do the same.

  • WHES has a goal to fill 160 bags of shoes!

Attached you will find a guide to help you decide what shoes to send in. If possible, please send in pairs of shoes tied or rubber banded together to make the bagging process easier . Thank you for helping make this a successful event. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer to help please reach out to Ashleigh Anderson (ashleighanderson1019@gmail.com) or Lauren King (laurenrking89@gmail.com).

Thank you for helping us reach our goal,

WHES PTA

Learning Style Inventory forms for placement considerations!

We welcome your input and help in guiding our decision of teacher assignment for your child for 23-24 by completing this learning style inventory. While this form is NOT treated as a request for inclusion or exclusion from a specific teacher’s class, we appreciate and acknowledge your input as we make classroom placement decisions for next year. Each staff member has his/her strengths which helps meet the many and varied needs of our students. Your input will be taken into advisement so as to best meet your child’s needs and learning style. We take student placement very seriously. The classroom teachers, counselor, special education teachers, specialists, and administrators are involved in the process. We appreciate your continued support and trust in the professional decisions we make at WHES.

Rationale and Guidelines Used for Student Placement Decisions:
Individual:
1. Match an individual student’s needs to teacher strengths and/or teaching style.
2. Match an individual student’s needs to group and other children in the class.

Group:
1. Provide a heterogeneous classroom group – i.e. a wide range of learning abilities
2. Equal or near equal boy/girl ratio.
3. Consideration of student affective needs.
4. Consideration of student work habits.

The form below needs to be completed no later than May 12th to be taken into consideration for placement for the 23-24 school year.

WatchD.O.G. Dads - come volunteer!

WHES has an up and running WATCHD.O.G. Dads program and we are always welcoming Dads in to volunteer! The Dads of Great Students WATCH D.O.G.S.® program is one of the nation’s largest and most respected school-based, family, and community engagement, organizations designed and developed by educators, experts and parent & guardian volunteers over more than two decades. Our program helps provide positive male role models for the students, demonstrating by their presence that education is important. Meanwhile, we provide extra sets of eyes and ears to enhance school security, reduce bullying and provide a greater sense of campus safety allowing students and teachers to focus on learning and instruction.

If Dads or guardians want to volunteer, please email WHES Principal Bethany Stegman at bstegman@d49.org!

Community Resources / Events

A new webpage has been created for D49 families. The Family Resource webpage contains district and community resources as well as a calendar of upcoming events for families that you may find very helpful!
Please review the information regarding attendance for the 22-23 school year! You will find our district policy, resources, and absence procedures.

Family Handbook & Information

As we get set to begin a new year, the WHES Family Handbook and Information Guide is a great place to find all information in regards to WHES operations, procedures, policies, etc. All information included is linked and serves as a reference guide for families. Health Information

Hi, I’m Shelly Duran and I am the nurse at Woodmen Hills. Below are some reminders regarding health and illness...

  • Medications - All medications, including over-the-counter medications, require a medication form completed by your child’s physician. Student’s may NOT bring medication to school or self-administer any medication. All medication forms and action plans can be found here: https://www.d49.org/domain/1284

  • Immunization Requirements - Colorado law requires all students to be immunized against certain communicable diseases. For more information regarding required immunizations and how to complete a non-medical immunization exemption form can be found here: https://www.d49.org/domain/261. (If you are filing a non-medical exemption, please complete the online module, print and sign the exemption form, and return to the health room.)

  • Illness Guidelines - Falcon School District 49 is following the Illness Guidelines from the Colorado Department of Public Health & Children’s Hospital Colorado. Please refer to these guidelines and keep sick students home. These guidelines are linked below.

  • Phones in the Classroom - Students are not permitted to use classroom phones or personal phones to contact parents in the event of illness. Students must come through the health room to call parents in order for the absence to be excused.

Nutrition Services Information

Woodmen Hills Elementary School offers breakfast and hot, school lunch each day. You can view more information from D49 Nutrition Services linked here. You can send lunch money in with your child or add money to their account by visiting D49 Nutrition Services. For assistance with meal fees, you can complete the Meal Assistance Application by visiting this link.

Lunch Prices:

  • Elementary:
    • Breakfast $2.50
    • Lunch $4.00
  • Secondary:
    • Breakfast $2.75
    • Lunch $4.35
  • Adult (without milk):
    • Breakfast $3.00
    • Lunch $ 4.75

Federal regulations play a direct role in setting the price of school meals and D49 is required to match government meal reimbursement rates by charging for meals. Updating our rates this year is a difficult, but necessary adjustment to continue providing meals in our challenging economy.

Specials Information / Schedules

Kindergarten and First Grade:

Kindergarten and first-grade students engage in 5 specials, including Art, Music, PE, PBL/Technology, and Library. Specials occur on a daily schedule. Students will have the same special on the same day of the week.

Second through Fifth Grade:

Second through fifth-grade students engage in 4 specials, including Art, Music, PE, and PBL/Technology. Specials occur daily, on a 5-day, ABCD, rotating basis. Students will have the same special for 5 school days in a row (i.e. art for 5 school days, then PE for 5 school days).

The Specials schedule is always available in the WHES Highlights sent weekly via email - the specials rotations link is for all grades, K-5th, and the ABCD monthly rotation calendars are for 2nd-5th grades.

Art Class Information: Students often use materials such as watercolors, watercolor pencils, tempera and acrylic paint, and oil pastels during art classes. While using these materials brings new discoveries and masterpieces, it can also bring a concern for not washing out of clothing, etc. Please consider having your child(ren) wear 'older' clothing items on art days.

PE Information: Students are active during PE class! Proper footwear supports safety and ability to move and engage in a variety of activities. Please ensure your child(ren) wear tennis shoes/sneakers on PE days.
