Drill Week
Dear Parent(s) or Guardian(s),
For those of you that were here in the fall, you may remember that we had a safety week at the beginning of the year. We have scheduled a safety week for our Spring Semester, as well. The safety and welfare of our students and staff are our highest priority here at ESE. In order to maintain a safe environment, it is necessary that we practice our emergency and crisis response plans throughout the school year to help our staff and students know what to do in an emergency.
January 9 - 13, 2022, we will conduct school-wide drills. Here are the drills along with a description for each day.
Monday - EVACUATE
- An evacuation is necessary when there is a threat inside the building, such as a fire.
- All staff and students will exit the building. There is a procedure in place to account for all staff and students.
- When the “all clear” is issued, staff and students return to the building
Tuesday - SECURE THE PERIMETER
- Secure the perimeter is necessary when incidents arise OUTSIDE of the school building that can pose a threat to students and staff safety and well-being. (Example: a crime occuring in the area)
- All staff/students will be moved indoors.
- Parents/visitors will not be admitted while the school is under Secure status.
- Students will not be released to parents while the school is under Secure status.
Wednesday - LOCKDOWN
- A lockdown is necessary when there is a threat very near or INSIDE the building, such as an intruder.
- All doors are secured and locked.
- Students and staff will move away from sight and maintain silence until first responders end the lockdown. Police officers will open doors once the situation is safe.
Thursday - SHELTER IN PLACE
- Shelter-in-place is an emergency course of action requiring everyone to immediately shelter where they are to avoid adverse conditions in the outside environment, such as excessive smoke or a chemical leak.
- All staff and students will be moved indoors.
Friday - Hold
- A hold is necessary when there is an emergency in the school that requires the halls to remain clear such as a medical emergency.
- All staff and students remain in the classroom and continue business as usual until an all clear is announced.
We feel that open and clear communications with parents and students are important to enhance our safety efforts and want you to know about the upcoming drill schedule. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us!
Sincerely,
April Maldonado & Katryn Overaker
