Summer break is here. After the tremendous work shown during challenging circumstances, I think our students and teachers deserve a break from school. I hope that everyone is able to stay safe and enjoy their break.
This update has some new articles, videos, and information on things going on at Regina. Please do not hesitate to let me know if you have any questions. Here are some of the new items this newsletter:

This month I offer a prayer from the USCCB that addresses racism. I feel it is appropriate given the climate of our city, country, and world. We are called as Christians to fight for equality for all. So I hope this prayer is one simple way to help you during this time and moving forward.
Wake me up Lord, so that the evil of racism
finds no home within me.
Keep watch over my heart Lord,
and remove from me any barriers to your grace,
that may oppress and offend my brothers and sisters.
Fill my spirit Lord, so that I may give
services of justice and peace.
Clear my mind Lord, and use it for your glory.
And finally, remind us Lord that you said,
"blessed are the peacemakers,
for they shall be called children of God."
Amen.
Your in Christ,
Glenn Plummer

Two Summer Opportunities from the Iowa Department of Human Rights
The Iowa Department of Human Rights has two youth advocacy programs: the Iowa Youth Congress (IYC) and the State of Iowa Youth Advisory Council (SIYAC). As members of these programs, youth learn about state and local government, advocacy, and civic engagement and gain valuable leadership skills such as public speaking, problem solving, and debate. Members also engage in community service and design a service project. IYC is currently accepting applications and SIYAC will be shortly opening up their application. Applications for both programs will be due June 30, 2020.
Iowa Youth Congress is a youth program consisting of up to 100 students, modeled after the Iowa House of Representatives. Youth between the ages of 14 and 18 are eligible. Originally established in 2006, IYC is a year-long program which begins each July. The program provides students the knowledge, abilities, and direction to advocate and enact change in their communities, and at the state-level. IYC brings students together from across the state to discuss issues that affect today’s youth. In addition, IYC members draft positions on youth issues, participate in an annual Mock Congress event, communicate their positions to legislators, and engage in service activities. For additional information about IYC please contact Claire Yocom (Claire.Yocom@iowa.gov) or visit the following website: https://humanrights.iowa.gov/cas/iowa-youth-congress
The State of Iowa Youth Advisory Council accepts a maximum of 21 youth who serve two-year terms beginning in July. Youth between the ages of 14 and 21 are eligible. Originally established in 2001, SIYAC was formalized in Iowa Code in 2009 as an avenue for youth to inform state leaders and local communities on issues important to young people. Members meet quarterly to identify issues affecting youth, discuss community needs, form partnerships to meet those needs, draft positions on youth issues, communicate those positions to legislators, and plan and conduct service activities. In addition, SIYAC members participate in Iowa Collaboration for Youth Development (ICYD) Council meetings. The ICYD Council oversees the activities of SIYAC and seeks input from these youth leaders in the development of more effective state-wide policies, practices, and programs. SIYAC members also carry out two service projects, one in their respective communities and one statewide. For additional information about SIYAC please contact Reeva Neighbors (Reeva.Neighbors@iowa.gov) or visit the following website: https://humanrights.iowa.gov/cas/siyac
Statewide Youth Broadband Advisory Council
Iowa Communications Network (ICN) is accepting student applications for its Statewide Youth Broadband Advisory Council (SYBAC) for the 2020-2021 school year. Students entering 10th - 12th grades, during the 2020-2021 school year, may apply for membership. Students research and discuss broadband and Internet topics, learn about Iowa technology companies, and discover technology careers. Meetings take place monthly, beginning in September 2020 through April 2021, via video conference.
Students interested should visit ICN's website at https://icn.iowa.gov/sybac.
