Better your Best
As 2017 comes to an end and we look upon 2018, I ask that you BETTER your BEST for our students and colleagues. What do you do to better yourself? What do you do to improve your lessons? What do you do to better your relationships at work? What do you do to engage your students?
We can all do better. The most dangerous beliefs we can have is that we are so good, we can not possibly do better.
How do we get better? By challenging our own perspectives. We can do this through observation, perspective taking, evaluation, learning, and critical conversations. Being told that you need to improve is difficult to hear, but it helps us Better our Best.
How are you going to Better Your Best? I challenge you to find a way to BETTER your BEST in 2018!

Title Schedule Update
We are quickly coming into the next round of FAST assessments/title qualifications and services. Here is an updated timeline for you to follow:
Dec. 22nd: Last day of Title Services for Round 1
Jan. 3rd: Title 6 week check/Title data analysis of Round One
Week of Jan. 22nd: Resume Title services
A reminder that the testing window will open as soon as we return from break. During this time, Title staff will assist with testing.

2017-2018 WBWF Goals
The percentage of all students in grades 3-5 at CSE enrolled by October 1st who score at or above grade level targets as measured by the READING will increase from 54.6% in 2017 to 65% in 2018.
The percentage of all students in grades 3-5 at CSE enrolled by October 1st who score at or above grade level targets as measured by the MATH MCA will increase from 60.4% in 2017 to 68% in 2018.

Increase awareness and usage of authentic literature that supports cultural competency and character education goals.
Book posters are being made to hang around the building to build excitement about books. Also working on a conferring practice profile as part of our Literacy Staff Engagement!

Health, Safety, Building Improvement

Create and maintain a physical plant feeling that is safe, warm and inviting for staff, students and parents.
We have completed the forms we created that will enable staff to electronically submit requests for building improvements and safety concerns. Eric will be including them in his Staff Updates. Feel free to look them over and offer suggestions for improvement or to make a formal request. We'd like to get as much staff input as possible in order to reach our goal of, "Creating and maintaining a physical plant feeling that is safe, warm, and inviting for staff, students, and parents."

Connect students in meaningful ways to foster cultural responsiveness and high character interactions.
New Family Groups format is allowing for more scheduling flexibility with teachers while still focusing on the core value of building community across grade levels. Patience is key as these family groups will remain the same over the course of the next couple years, and this is where the strength in relationships will be developed.

Learning as We Go

A DirecTV commercial shows a man on his computer. As he works, you hear, “Stop! You have reached the end of the Internet. You have seen all there is to see. Please go back now.” This commercial makes me consider the unattainability of that task. The amount of information on the Internet makes it impossible to surf every page and reach “the end.” In fact, there are more than 1 billion websites, and that number only continues to grow. There is always something new to see or read on the World Wide Web—much like there is always more to learn about teaching.
No two students are alike, and therefore, we’ll never have a single program or practice that always works. We are not able to finish reading a text and say, “We have reached the end of all there is to know about teaching” because that is simply not possible. There is always something new to learn that will help us better meet the needs of our students. Because of this, we cannot afford to “stop” and become complacent. Instead, we must actively pursue new knowledge that will strengthen our practice. We can do this in many ways:
- Collaborate with colleagues and inquire about what they are doing.
- Read the latest literature and research to uncover new thinking.
- Read the “best” literature. Although it is important to stay up to date with the latest, we must also remember that many great books are not new.
- Ask questions and seek answers that aid in our instructional decision making.
- Challenge practices that are not producing the results our students deserve.
- Attend conferences to reenergize, meet new colleagues, and gain new information.
True growth happens when we step outside our comfort zones and are brave enough to make changes we know we should. It also happens when we seek personal growth and deeper learning in well-known areas. As we open our minds to learn from other teachers, from our students, from our students’ parents, and from the community at large, we grow in our practice. It is advantageous that we will never reach “the end,” because that means that under our instruction, our students won’t either.

What I love most about my job at CSE
I love seeing every student at CSE. I also love sharing my favorite books with the students and I love when they share their favorite books with me.

My favorite children's book is Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems. It is my favorite because when Mrs. Zumwalde and I read it to the students they always ask to hear it again.
I enjoy, reading, quilting, dancing and gardening.

An interesting fact about me is that in my family four of the five people have birthdays on the same day of the week every year
