Staff members who wish to hire student workers must submit a list of names to the principal using the Campus Student Worker Request Form. This will include specific student information.
Principal sends the form electronically to substitute@pisd.edu.
An HR Specialist will send instructions to the office manager and teacher including instructions for students to complete the online application, necessary paperwork, and payroll sheets.
An HR Specialist will also send application instructions directly to the students. It is the teacher’s responsibility to be sure all students have completed his/her application.
Once all applications have been submitted, completed and verified by Human Resources, an e-mail will be sent to the student with instructions about the fingerprint process. We will copy the office manager and teacher as well.
State law (Section 22.0833 of the Texas Education Code) requires that non-certified employees (which would include part-time employees and paid student workers) be fingerprinted and submit to a national criminal history check.
When all student applicants have been fingerprinted and cleared by the Safety and Security Department, an email will be sent to the office manager and teacher to coordinate a time for a student worker orientation at your campus to complete the new hire paperwork.
Once students are hired and begin working, time sheets are submitted to the campus office manager and signed by the principal.
The office manager will forward approved time sheets (originals) via interdistrict mail to Human Resources ATTN: Shaista Jiwani. Note: NO students should perform work for the district prior to completing their new hire paperwork with a Human Resources representative.
Student workers are separated from employment at the end of each school year and are required to reapply if they wish to work in subsequent years.
Student workers may not work during the school day. Students who perform in events are not compensated for the event or for preparation of the event.
The hiring process may take up to two weeks to complete. Campuses are encouraged to plan ahead.
Student/parents should not be sent directly to HR regarding the application process. Their first point of contact is the campus office manager.
Student workers hired during the school year are not eligible to work past the last day of school unless HR has been notified. Summer processes for hiring students are different.
