Back to School

2019-2020 School Year

Student & Parent Edition

As the summer comes to a close and we prepare together for the coming academic year, I wish to take this opportunity to welcome you all back to Maplewood. The start of the year is always a special time, with new students and faculty, new relationships, new learning and conversations beginning anew after the summer months. I eagerly look forward to greeting students and families again. It remains an honor and privilege to serve as your principal. Please stop by and say hello. Together, I know we will make this school year one of growth and achievement for all children. I look forward to the year ahead!

In partnership,

Mrs. Erin Fonzo

First Day of School

The first day of school for students is Wednesday, August 28, 2019. Please read below for specific beginning and end of day arrival and dismissal procedures. We are so excited to start a new year!

PENNCREST District Calendar

2019-2020 district calendar is included in the following link: PENNCREST School District calendar. Please refer to it often to be aware of school holidays, teacher conferences and other important days this school year.

Homeroom Placements

A great deal of time, effort and thought has gone into the process of student placement for the 2019-2020 school year. Careful consideration was given to input from staff and families as well as student learning styles. Classrooms have been balanced academically and socially. Our class lists are structured to provide equitable class sizes at each grade level. Moving students is difficult without causing imbalances and inequities.Thank you so much for being positive with your child and helping him or her understand that it is impossible to place all students with a preferred best friend or teacher. ALL of our staff works hard to make school a positive experience for ALL students. Maplewood is eagerly looking forward to enriching your child’s life. Thank you for understanding that it can take a few weeks for a child to acclimate to a new school, grade, peer group and teacher.

Homeroom placements will be mailed home the week of August 12, 2019. If you have not received your child's welcome back packet in the mail by Monday, August 19, 2019, please call the school for this information at (814)337-1659.

Kindergarten Orientation

Kindergarten orientation for our littlest learners will be held on Monday, August 26, 2019 at 5:00pm. Come meet your child's teacher, hear what kindergarten is going to be all about and even enjoy a snack! If you have a child turning five on or before August 31, 2019, but he or she is not signed up for kindergarten yet, please call the MES main office at (814)337-1659 so that we can get your child registered.

Open House

Our "Back to School Bash" which will be held on Monday, August 26, 2019 from 6:00-7:30. We will start in the auditorium at 6:00 to welcome families and introduce staff. Enjoy an evening of meeting our school staff and pay our playground a visit to see what PTO has in store for the year and to see what other visitors we have joining us that night!

Supply Lists

Compiled are supply lists of general items that grade levels use on a regular basis. If you would like to donate any of the items below, please send them to school with your child or drop them off at the main school office in a bag with your child’s name written on it. You could also bring them to Open House on August 26, 2019! Any donations will be greatly appreciated, but are by no means required.

Student Arrival

Students will be able to be dropped off by their parents beginning at 7:45am through the front lobby doors. Upon entering the building, students will report to the cafeteria and remain there until 8:00am. Breakfast will be served in the cafeteria beginning at that time as well. Our students on buses will arrive beginning at approximately 7:55am. The late bell will ring at 8:10am and instruction will begin at 8:15am.

Dismissal procedures are essentially staying the same as previous school years, but the times have shifted slightly:

Visitor Parking

We love to have visitors join us! Whether you are visiting us for a meeting, to help out in a classroom or just popping in real quick to pick up or drop off your child, please park in our visitor parking lot located at the front of our building (to the right of the main office when you pull in). The only way to access the building during school hours will be through the front lobby doors and getting signed in by a front office staff member. Anytime during school hours that you enter the building and plan to go past the office, you will need to sign in using our RAPTOR identification system and wear a visitor tag. Safety and security of students are our number one priority so these procedures are followed with that goal in mind.

Traffic Patterns

Big picture
Big picture
Student pick up and drop off zones are in the same locations as in previous years - the front of the school. To alleviate the heavy traffic flow in the mornings, students will be able to be dropped off at the front of the school beginning at 7:45am until 8:10am when the late bell will ring. As mentioned above, student safety is our number one priority and that is why we have a separate loading zone for our buses in the back parking lot of school to keep our students loading and unloading buses out of parent traffic flow. Please help us uphold this safety standard by always entering and exiting Maplewood Elementary through the front drive to avoid our bus loading and unloading zones. Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this important safety measure!

Facility Updates

Through capital improvement funds, Maplewood Elementary had new flooring installed in the:

  • front lobby
  • auditorium lobby
  • Room 157 (Makerspace)

Peterson's Flooring completed the job at the end of July and it looks great! Check it out the next time you stop in the building!

Off to New Adventures

Our School-Wide Theme is..... 'Dream!'

Thanks to Mrs. Menanno's super research skills, she took the theme of DREAM and found a great book that supports this! It is simply called 'Dream: A Tale of Wonder, Wisdom & WIshes' by Susan V. Bosnak. Great news - through Title funds, Mrs. Patti Fiely is purchasing every classroom at MES one so that we all have access to the book. Let's dream BIG this year, Maplewood!
