Madame Sul Te Wan (March 7, 1873 - February 1, 1959)
Madame Sul-Te-Wan (born Nellie Crawford, was the first black actress to sign a film contract and be a featured performer. She was an American stage, film and television actress for over 50 years. Born in Louisville, KY, she was the daughter of former slaves, she began her career in entertainment touring the East Coast with various theatrical companies and moved to California to become a member of the fledgling film community. She became known as a character actress, appeared in high-profile films such as The Birth of a Nation (1915) and Intolerance (1916), and easily navigated the transition to the sound films.

Mask Mandates
I want to make sure you are aware that there could be changes coming from the CDC, or even our state government, regarding masks in schools. If there are changes, we will follow the CDC guidelines and the directive from the district. As a school, we will continue to follow the same expectation that masks are required for ALL until we hear otherwise.

Changes in COVID Protocols
- Fayette County Public Schools is committed to maximizing in-person learning opportunities and has implemented layered prevention strategies recommended by health and medical experts to reduce the potential spread of COVID-19 and safeguard the well-being of students, employees, and families.
Masks: FCPS will continue to require face masks while indoors in all district facilities and FCPS vehicles, including on school buses.
- Monitoring for Symptoms: Students and employees should continue the practice of staying home if they are experiencing any symptoms of COVID -19, such as fever (temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or greater) or chills, a new cough, difficulty breathing, sore throat, muscle or body aches, vomiting or diarrhea, and an onset of loss of taste or smell. They should not return to school until they have been fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication.
Vaccines are now available for all individuals five years of age and older. Information about vaccine locations is available here.
Vaccinations
Between the ages of 5 and 17, an individual is “up to date” on their vaccinations beginning 14 days after receiving their second dose of the Pfizer vaccine.
18 years and older, an individual is “up to date” on their vaccinations
- For five months, beginning 14 days after receiving their second dose of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine.
- For two months, beginning 14 days after receiving one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
- Immediately after receiving a booster shot. Note: no waiting period is needed. (Individuals aged 12 and up are eligible for a booster shot five months after receiving their two-shot regimen of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine or two months after receiving one-shot of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.)
Masks
Mask requirements apply to all students (K through 12), employees, contractors, and visitors, regardless of immunization status, with the exception of those who have a medical exemption or exemption determined by an Admissions and Release Committee.
- Properly worn masks should cover the nose and mouth of the wearer and strict adherence to this requirement is central to stopping the potential spread of COVID-19.
• Masks are recommended for preschool students who can successfully remove a face covering on their own.
• Students may lower their masks while outdoors or while actively eating or drinking.
• Staff may lower their masks while outdoors, alone in their individual offices or classrooms, or while actively eating or drinking.
• Employees are encouraged to eat alone in their individual offices or classrooms at this time.
ISOLATION FOR POSITIVE CASES
Fayette County Public Schools does not place anyone in isolation or advise them how long they have to stay home.
FCPS honors the orders from medical professionals.
Students and staff who have tested positive for COVID-19 may return to work or school when their isolation period is over AND they have not had any symptoms of COVID-19 for 24 hours without taking symptom-reducing medications.
QUARANTINE FOR THOSE EXPOSED TO A POSITIVE CASE
Individuals who are not up-to-date with COVID-19 vaccination and who do not have a documented (positive PCR or antigen test) COVID-19 infection in the prior 3 months should quarantine for 10 full days if they have no symptoms or five days if they have no symptoms and test negative on or after day five of quarantine and can wear a well-fitting mask for 5 additional days. Those who cannot wear a mask should quarantine at home for 10 full days if they have no symptoms.
Individuals who are up-to-date with COVID-19 vaccination do not need to quarantine if they do not have any symptoms. The state health departments recommends they get tested five to seven days after their exposure and wear a mask indoors for 10 days.
Those who have been placed in quarantine by the health department or a medical professional because of an out-of-school exposure will have the choice to quarantine at home or participate in the Test-to-Stay-in-School program.
TEST TO STAY IN SCHOOL
Students and staff who have been exposed to COVID-19 in any setting may remain on campus as long as they are symptom-free without the use of symptom-reducing medication AND test negative during free on-campus testing before school on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays during their quarantine period.
A new version of the consent form has been developed and we need families to sign the new form even if they have already completed the original form.
Reporting A Positive Case
Under state law, families should notify the school district within 24 hours of learning the child has tested positive for COVID-19.
- FCPS employees who test positive for COVID-19 are also required to inform the district.
- Reports can be made by calling 859-381-FCPS (3277) between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m., emailing covid19@fayette.kyschools.us to request a follow-up phone call to report the details, or submitting your name and phone number via the online form at bit.ly/FCPSreport.
- FCPS will continue to publish the number of new COVID-19 cases among students and employees by school on the FCPS COVID-19 Dashboard at www.fcps.net/COVID19. Quarantine data will not be reported after Tuesday, January 18, 2022.
Testing
Beginning Wednesday, January 19, 2022, voluntary testing for students and employees will be available before school starts at every school in the district on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Appointments are required and can be made online at www.fcps.net/COVIDtesting.
Students and staff should register to be tested at their school location.
Testing for families is available by appointment seven days a week at the FCPS building located at 100 Midland Avenue (the old Herald-Leader building). We will soon be adding testing for families at 1126 Russell Cave Road (the FCPS Warehouse.) Make an appointment here.
REMOTE INSTRUCTION
In FCPS the term “Non Traditional Instruction or NTI” will be reserved for weather days and “remote learning” will apply to temporary shifts to learning at home due to COVID-19.
A school may be considered for remote learning if any of the following conditions are met:
● Widespread outbreak of illness within the school community
● Unmanageable percentage of a school’s classroom teacher absences are unfilled
● Absences of essential classified staff impede the school’s ability to operate safely
Before shifting to remote learning, we will make every effort to institute temporary measures the school can take to maintain safe and nurturing learning environments and deploy district support services staff to help.
- We will continue to keep our schools open as consistently as possible as long as we are confident we can do so safely.
In the event that a school temporarily moves to remote learning:
● Families will be notified by the district via email, phone call, and text message.
Announcements will also be shared on the district website and through the local news media. Our goal is to communicate any changes as early as possible, no later than 6 p.m. the day before remote learning would begin.
● School staff will reach out to families directly with more information about schedules and instruction.
● Boxed breakfasts and lunches will be available for curbside pickup at the school daily between 11 a.m. and noon for students enrolled at that school.
● Technology support will be available by calling 859-381-4410 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
● Mental health services, social-emotional support, or assistance with other needs will be available at www.fcps.net/gethelp.
● Support for students in need of supervision and/or assistance during the temporary remote learning period will be available through a partnership with the YMCA for a nominal fee. Details will be provided to families should this circumstance arise.
COMMITMENT
The Fayette County Board of Education has invested millions of dollars in mitigation and prevention measures, including:
• Installing UVC lights and air purifiers in our 27 oldest facilities.
• Extending the hours of HVAC in all schools to assist with indoor air quality.
• Providing air purifiers for classrooms without windows.
• Purchasing PPE and additional cleaning supplies and equipment.
• Extending COVID-19 leave benefits for employees.
• Incentivizing vaccination for employees.

Fayette County Public Schools has established a COVID-19 Hotline for processing these notifications, which must be submitted to the Kentucky Department for Public Health.
Please choose one of these three ways to alert FCPS:
- Call (859) 381-FCPS (3277),
- Email the COVID-19 Hotline to request a follow-up phone call to report the details, or
