“It is dangerous to make everybody go forward by the same road: and worse to measure others by oneself.” ~ Saint Ignatius of Loyola
Greetings Everyone,
We will soon be (perhaps some of us are there already) at that time of the semester when stress levels rise people feel exhausted. It is at times like these we feel we have no time to spare for prayer and reflection. However, these are the moments when such time is most important. There is good news when it comes to finding such time in the busyness of the semester! We have an app for that!
St. Ignatius developed The Examen as simple way of prayerfully reflecting on one’s day. The Examen is short and broken down into just FIVE steps:
1. Become aware of God’s presence. Enter into a greater awareness of the present moment. Focus on your breathing; feel grounded in your surroundings.
2. Review the day with gratitude. Gratitude is the foundation of our relationship with God. Gratitude for challenges and successes, for difficult and pleasant experiences - all these invite us to a greater awareness; expressing gratitude is an act of empowerment. Look over the major experiences of the day and your responses to them. Focus on one or two experiences that stand out.
3. Pay attention to your emotions. One of St. Ignatius’s great insights was that we detect the presence of the Spirit of God in the movements of our emotions. Reflect on the feelings you experienced during the day. What interior moods, feelings, reactions, emotions and/or thought patterns are associated with these experiences?
In particular, pay attention to:
Spiritual consolations: feelings of increased love for others, feelings of empathy, interior joy, quiet, peace, movement towards something greater, a sense of hopeful purpose, not self absorbed.
Spiritual desolations: experiences of distress of soul, unrest, self-focused, desire for base things, lack of confidence, faith, hope or love, slothfulness, dryness, sadness, weight, separation from others, thoughts that lead away from peace.
4. Choose one feature of the day and pray from it. Ask the Holy Spirit to direct you to something during the day that God thinks is particularly important. How have these interior movements affected your outward actions? How do these interior movements influence your thoughts of self and world?
5. Look toward tomorrow with joy and hope. Ask God to give you light for tomorrow’s challenges. What deeper awareness of yourself is this feature inviting you to? How are you being called to respond? Look toward tomorrow with hope.
Purpose of the Examen is to take inventory of the events of the day and begin to reflect on the invitation of how one’s experiences are inviting oneself to move forward in a spirit of openness and hope, especially in the face of challenges and despair. Give it a try for a week! Take a few minutes each evening to use these five simple steps to find joy and hope that is all around you - sometime we are too busy or stressed to see it!

Deeper Than the Skin: A Musical Presentation on Race
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2019 from 7:00PM – 9:30PM
Beston Hall, Glazer Music Performance Center
Open to Nazareth College and Rochester Community
Attendance is Free and No Ticket Required
Born three days apart, with ancestry coming through the same portal of history, Richmond, VA, Reggie Harris and Greg Greenway are on a pilgrimage together, one that began three decades ago. The racial divisions that are the reality of America positioned them in two different worlds, but the amazing bonds of music, respect, admiration, and shared vision have brought them together as friends and colleagues. The musical and spiritual blooming of this history has become Deeper than the Skin, the telling of their stories through words and music. It is a quintessentially American story: The gift they have to give is how to face struggle with hope, and even joy.
