Torrey Hill Intermediate School
Newsletter for January 2023
Welcome to 2023- A Note From The Principal
Dear Wonderful Torrey Hill Families,
Happy New Year! I would like to extend best wishes to all for a happy and healthy new year. It’s a pleasure to see all of the children, teachers and staff back at school after a long, well deserved break.
1-Congratulations to the following two students recognized by our Board of Education for being Extraordinary!
Casey Springer
Aubrey Garceau
2- This is a friendly reminder that as the snow flies and the temperatures dip here in Michigan, children need to be dressed appropriately and to play during recess. Coats, hats, mittens/gloves, snow pants, and boots are a must this time of year. They are required to play in the "field areas" of our playground vs. the blacktop. Let us know if you need any of these items.
3- We will have new staff leaving and others starting very soon. We'd like to say farewell to Mr. Rohen, our STEM teacher. He will be moving to West Shore for second semester but we will see him again next fall. Along with that change, comes the addition of Mrs. Kennedy for Art classes. She is moving from West Shore to Torrey Hill and we are anxious for art instruction to begin at Torrey Hill. She will return to West Shore next fall. Mr. Fournier was our long-term substitute teacher for our special education students. He is leaving next week. We recently hired a full-time special education teacher, Ms. Deb Spranger. She will be starting on January 16th!
4- Did you know it is Board of Education Appreciation Month? We are celebrating and thanking new members during this month. Take a look at our current BOE roster. And, farewell to those who have recently left and served our community in a volunteer capacity for years.
Current Members:
Chris Fletcher, President ¨ Heidi Howieson, Vice President ¨ Michael Peraino, Secretary ¨ BobHutchins, Treasurer Shannon Elenbaas, Trustee ¨ Robert Kamischke, Trustee ¨ Justin Schweigert, Trustee
Thank you for your years of service and farewell to Larry Godlewski, Katherine Carswell and Michelle Curtain!
This newsletter provides a look at what is happening here as we kick off 2023 together! As always, please contact the school regarding any questions you may have.
Yours in Learning,
Mrs. K. Conover

Full-Time Counselor At Torrey HIll
Our school counselor is now full time at Torrey Hill! We are so thrilled to have Mrs. Caldwell here to support all of our students in a variety of ways. She has already provided Xello (career planning) resources to all students. In addition, any student may request her support on an "as needed" basis. Small groups are conducted for many students, as well. These groups take place weekly and if parents/guardians wish to have their child opt out, please put requests in writing. Groups focus on internal and external concerns such as anxiety, depression, grief, friendships, bullying, aggression, etc. Again, we are thrilled to have Mrs. Caldwell provide support to all of our Torrey Hill students. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Conover, Principal, your child's teacher or Mrs. Caldwell.

Any bus changes must be approved by the principal at least 24 hours in advance. Students are not allowed to take alternative buses home unless their is an emergency situation. Please do not use bus transportation as a means of transporting friends for after school social or extracurricular events. Our buses have capacity limits and we cannot add students to bus routes. We care about the safety of our students and therefore must closely monitor ridership on our school buses.
