Garfield PTA
Hello Tiger families!
Those of us at the PTA are so excited for our first fundraising event TOMORROW (Monday) evening at Shawn O’Donnell’s from 4-8pm! We welcome everyone to stop by, enjoy a meal, and leave their copy of the receipt with us at the door. It’s that easy to donate 25% of your purchase to the PTA! We hope you will be able to join us! Also, through the month of November, both Diedrich Espresso stands will have donation jars available to drop your change into while you’re stopping off for a tasty snack or beverage. We greatly appreciate everyone that continues to support our students. If you would like to be a member, but cost is a barrier, please reach out to us at garfieldtigerspta@gmail.com. If you are not a member yet and would like to sign up, please go to online form and follow the on screen prompts. We look forward to collaborating with all of you to help make this an amazing year for our Tigers!

News our Health Room - Nurse Shannon Leach
The season of WINTER VIRUSES is upon us, so as a parent, it’s good to become an expert. How can you tell which illness your child may be suffering from?
Start with this handy chart below from Children’s Hospital – Los Angeles.
These lists are not all inclusive. People experiencing any of these warning signs mentioned below should obtain medical care right away. Please consult your medical provider for any other symptom that is severe or concerning including, but, not limited to:
- Bluish lips or face
- Rapid breathing, flaring nostrils, wheezing and grunting
- Shortness of breath / difficulty breathing
- Chest caving in with each breath
- Very ill/drowsy
- Poor feeding
- Severe muscle pain (child refuses to walk)
- Dehydration (No urine for 8 hours/dry mouth/no tears with crying)
- Vomiting for more than 24 hours
- Bloody diarrhea
- Fever above 104 F in any child, above 100.4 F if child is under 2 months old, above 103 F for more than 24 hours
- Not alert or interactive when awake
- Seizures, or,
- A fever/cough that improves but then returns or becomes worse

RSV
Lastly, according to the Snohomish Health Department, RSV is on the rise across the country and in Washington State.
Respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Most people recover in a week or two, but RSV can be serious, especially for infants and older adults.
Symptoms of RSV
- Runny nose
- Decrease in appetite
- Coughing
- Sneezing
- Fever
- Wheezing
These symptoms usually appear in stages and not all at once; they typically begin 4-6 days after exposure. Parents should seek treatment IMMEDIATELY if their child is having difficulty breathing, not drinking enough fluids, or experiencing worsening symptoms.
Tips (from Healthychildren.org) that may help with ANY bad respiratory infection (whether just a cold, influenza, COVID, or RSV)
- Nasal saline with gentle suctioning to allow easier breathing and feeding.
- Cool-mist humidifier to help break up mucus and allow easier breathing.
- Fluids and frequent feedings. Make sure your child is staying hydrated. Infants with a common cold may feed more slowly or not feel like eating, because they are having trouble breathing. Try to suction baby's nose before attempting to breast or bottle-feed. Supplementation with water or formula is unnecessary for breastfed babies. If difficult for the baby to feed at the breast, expressing breastmilk into a cup or bottle may be an option.
- Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen (if older than 6 months) to help with low-grade fevers. Always avoid aspirin, and cough and cold medications.
None of this is to scare you… simply to help you keep an eye out on your children’s symptoms and what you can do to prevent and treat, and when to seek evaluation when they are ill.
And lastly, never hesitate to reach out to your student’s health room with questions or concerns. As the school nurse for your child(ren), I am here to support you and your family the best that I can!
