Buckingham Parent Newsletter
March 2015
Principal Note...
I am looking forward to a productive and lucky month of March at Buckingham. "May your day be touched with a bit of Irish luck, brightened by a song in your heart and warmed with smiles by the people you love."~ Irish Proverb
Our character trait this month is cooperation. I feel that effective cooperation between parents and school is critical to each of our students' success. By communicating effectively we can accomplish our common goal of supporting students' growth in academics, problem solving and friendships. Please know that the educators at Buckingham are passionate about supporting your child as an individual and we all want to partner with each of you and gain your insight in how to best support your student(s). Cooperation is key in building a positive school and home relationship that is positive, supportive and focuses on student success. Please reach out to your child's teacher or the office with any concerns with the intent to solve and clarify problems. We are here for your children.

Safety in Buckingham Parking Lot
It is important that all children are in booster seats or seat belts when they are driving through the parking lot. We have many cars jammed into a small space and we do not want a fender bender to result in hurt children. Please remember to not text or talk on your phone while driving in the parking lot for the same reason.

The Giving Campaign for STEM Education coming in April!
“Wow! That was so much fun, I can’t wait for my next design” “I am going to go home and engineer some more!” “I’ve never seen students so engaged and interested in what they are doing!” “I have been teaching for 25 years and I have never been so excited to teach, as I am today to be a part of STEM education.”
STEM focused curriculum emphasizes problem solving, critical thinking and connections between the classroom and the real world. The goal of STEM curriculum is to mold students into members of our future workforce who are well prepared for the careers in which they will ultimately work. And as you can see above, our kids love it! That’s why we are so excited about introducing STEM to our students and to our amazing Buckingham families!
In April, there will be a Giving Letter asking for $47.50 to be donated per student to provide all students with opportunities for field experiences tied to Next Generation Standards, project-based learning, Project Lead the Way curriculum, bringing in STEM professionals into our schools and opportunities to integrate Science, Technology, Engineering and Math into all content areas.
Cooperation will be the focus of our Character Education in March
Boundary and Area Change Transfers
The Superintendent’s Office is sending a letter to all families who are affected by the boundary changes. Families who are seeking more information go to this website www.bend.k12.or.us/boundary2014
Students who are currently in fourth grade, can apply to be grandfathered in to their current school. We are asking those interested families to fill out a Grandfathering Request and return it to their current school.
Families with children who do not qualify for Grandfathering can fill out an Attendance Area Change Request. Those requests are due March 2.

The Friendship Bench...coming to Buckingham!

We Ruduce is partnering with Buckingham to reduce food waste.
We are attempting to educate students on choosing a well balanced healthy lunch and only taking what they will eat. On Tuesdays, we are collecting food waste and measuring the food, so we can chart our progress in reducing food waste. We are collecting the food waste and donating to local pigs.If students bring their lunch to school they are instructed to keep the food they do not eat in their lunch box, so parents are aware of what their student is eating.
Our first Tuesday, we collected 98 pounds of food waste. The next week we significantly reduced our numbers...hurray! Our students are beginning to become more responsible of their choices already.
