CHAT GENERATIVE PRE-TRAINED TRANSFORMER (Chat GPT)
Another important task to complete before school starts is discussing your child's use of technology and social media, particularly while in school or related to schoolwork. In addition to online safety, it is important for parents to understand ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer), an artificial intelligence chatbot that is not only able to have a semi-human conversation with users, it can write and debug computer programs, compose music, write essays, answer test questions and translate and summarize text, among other applications. Here's how it works: ChatGPT copies and remixes information from other places on the internet. While it's improving with each new version, it makes mistakes, spreads misinformation, and gives inaccurate answers. ChatGPT also collects personal information and user data. ChatGPT is free to use and anyone can sign up. This makes it easy for kids and teens to access it. Like all technology, it can be very useful and educational but it can also be misused. See the What is ChatGTP video below from Common Sense Media to learn more about it.
SAFETY UPDATE
Online Safety - Please make your expectations clear to your children regarding social media use and misuse. Cyberbullying continues to be a major problem in schools everywhere. Cyber threats to schools is a major problem too. The other major issue to discuss with your children is sharing private information, including passwords, home address, date of birth, location, or photos. Students need to pause and think before they post, text, or share. The negative impact of technology, specifically social media, on our children's mental and emotional well-being is a growing problem in society and among the many societal issues that bleed into schools. Thank you in advance for discussing online safety with your children. Common Sense Media provides technology use planning tools in English and Spanish to help parents help their children use technology responsibly.
