Building a Community of Learners
Welcome Back!
Winter Break is behind us and we are so excited to see our first graders' smiling faces on Monday morning. On behalf of the first grade team, we hope that your family had a wonderful Christmas holiday and a fantastic start to 2016! We will be spending some time this week to review expectations and build our stamina so that we can rock on into the New Year!

This Week in First Grade
Reading
This week in reading, we will begin our unit entitled "Readers Have Big Jobs to Do," which focuses on fluency, phonics, and comprehension. This unit will prepare students to read increasingly complex texts while maintaining meaning accuracy, comprehension, and fluency. Students will focus on word-solving strategies and reading independence.
Math
The focus this week in math will be adding with three addends. (2+3+8=13) As we move through the week, we will progress to problems with missing addends. (5+_?_+6=15)
Writing
Before Winter Break, we completed our unit on personal narratives, or "small moment" stories. Our focus now will be on writing to express our opinions.
