Tsar Alexander II
1818-1881
Personal Profile
Tsar Alexander II of Russia was the successor to Tsar Nicolas I. His liberal education and distress at the outcome of the Crimean War inspired him toward great domestic reforms in Russia, the most important of these being the Emancipation of Serfs in 1861. A repression in 1866 led to a resurgence and revolutionary terrorism, later causing Alex II's assassination in 1881.
