Hightower Theodore Kealing

Born in 1859 in Austin, Texas, Hightower Theodore Kealing was raised as the son of former slaves. This made H.T. Kealing part of the first generation of blacks to attend school in the United States. After completing high school, Kealing enrolled in Straight University in New Orleans. While in New Orleans, Kealing was converted and joined the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1875 - a decision that would greatly impact the rest of his life.

Principal's Message to Hornet Families for the week of January 31st, 2021

Hello fantastic family members,

I hope you all have had a great weekend with your families. This past week we were proud to have the opportunity to award 7 more staff members with the Kealing it award for their hard work and commitment to the campus. We also had the opportunity to award and congratulate Mrs. Tania Tasneem for earning the 2020-2021 Teacher of the Year Award. Mrs. Tasneem not only delivers high level instruction daily but she is also a member of the KMS Teacher Work Group and the Superintendent's Round Table. She extends her reach far beyond the classroom and consistently takes action to make our campus a GREAT place for students and staff alike. This past week we administered the Middle of the Year exams for our students are excited to see the results so we can actively work to close any gaps or tailor instruction to push our scholars to maintain or achieve mastery on the Spring 2021 STAAR exams. We look forward to another great week of teaching and learning and the iReady exam administration.

#BEGREATmentality

Congratulations to the Kealing Middle School Teacher of the Year 2020-2021 : Mrs. Tania Tasneem!

AISD Goes Red !

This week, we are celebrating Healthy Heart Week. Today’s healthy
heart tip is “Get Active.” Your heart is a muscle, and it gets stronger and
healthier with daily physical activity. Participating in at least 30 minutes of
moderate physical activity a day five times per week helps lower your risks for
heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Students can use PE Class, Athletics, or take
a walk around their neighborhood to be active and strengthen their hearts!
awareness about heart disease and save lives; because when we come
together, there's nothing we can't do. It's important to keep your heart healthy
by being physically active, eating well, and being kind to yourself and others. By
practicing these healthy habits, you can lower your risk for heart disease no
matter what age you are. On Friday it is National Wear Red Day; so, wear red Friday. Don't forget to share your group pictures on Twitter
using the hashtags: #AISDGoesRed2021, #BeWellDoGood, and #AISDHasHeart

Kealing Yearbook Scholarships

The Kealing Yearbook Staff is committed to documenting the Kealing middle school experience each year through our award winning yearbook. We are also committed to ensuring that every student who might not be able to afford a yearbook has access to one through our scholarship program. This year's yearbook theme is "We're Kealing It", in other words we want to highlight the various way students and staff are persevering and even thriving during this challenging academic year.

Your generosity will be noted in each of the 650 copies that we produce. Further, as a nationally recognized publication, our book is often seen across the country at conventions and as a publisher’s sample, which may further its reach.

Can you help me raise money for Kealing Middle School Yearbook 2021Scholarship Fund? Together we can keep Kealing It!

The Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) recently announced an extension of current school meal programs through the 2020-21 school year. Through the federally-funded program, all Austin ISD students will receive free school meals through June 3, the last day of school.

For students participating in remote, off-campus learning, free 7 day meal packs will be available each Thursday at more than 40 curbside locations throughout Austin. While Austin ISD plans to continue curbside service as long as needed, meal sites are subject to change as more students transition to on-campus learning.

Austin ISD COVID-19 Dashboard

Austin ISD is committed to putting health and safety protocols in place that will prevent the occurrence and/or spread of COVID-19. However, we must be prepared to quickly and effectively respond to and communicate a lab-confirmed or suspected case of COVID-19 at a school or other Austin ISD facility.

The Austin ISD COVID-19 Dashboard will be updated by noon each Tuesday, starting the week of Sept. 21. All lab-confirmed positive cases on campuses will be communicated directly to the campus community. Individuals who may have been exposed will be contacted directly and provided information on the next steps, including a quarantine timeline if needed.
