Apache News - March 2019

Arendtsville Elementary School

Principal Points from Mrs. Buckley

March has come in like a lion, but hopefully, it will go out like a lamb. The past few weeks we've experienced many days of inclement weather causing a number of delays or cancellations. Maintaining a consistent routine has been a struggle. Please encourage your child to continue to complete homework assignments and keep up with regular study habits.

Thank you to all of the parents who attended Parent Teacher Conferences last week. We had an excellent turnout once again. We appreciate your dedication to helping your child grow as a learner.

Thanks to February snow and ice, the Easter Break has been shortened considerably! Students will now have full days of school on Wednesday, April 17th; Thursday, April 18th; and Monday, April 22nd. Friday, April 19th, remains as a no-school day for students and staff. Also, please note that due to the snow day on February 20th, the end of the year calendar has been adjusted as such:

  • May 27 - No school for students - Memorial Day Holiday
  • May 28 - FULL DAY of school for students
  • May 29 - FULL DAY of school for students
  • May 30 - DISMISSAL @ 1PM for students

Picture Day is Almost Here!!

Since the day arrived with snow and ice, Picture Day (originally to be held in mid-February) was rescheduled to take place on Wednesday, March 6th. Remember, group pictures must be ordered on picture day. However, individual student photos will be printed for every child. Once received, parents/guardians will be able to look at your child's pictures and only pay for what you want to keep . Don't want to purchase any? No problem. Simply return the entire packet to school. NOTE: We do not schedule a picture retake day for spring pictures.

Just a reminder - Lifetouch is now a Shutterfly partner. As part of this partnership, Shutterfly is offering a $30 voucher off of any Shutterfly purchase to all families that purchase their Lifetouch portraits online. Also, all students that are photographed will receive a coupon for free items and discounts from Shutterfly in their portrait envelope.

Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten registration for the 2019-2020 school year will be held on March 14th and 15th. At this point, most families have already been contacted by the District. However, if you have - or know of - a child who will be age 5 before September 1, 2019, and have not received information about this process, please call the Biglerville Elementary School office at 717-677-5200 to get all the details.

GATEways students and their families are invited to attend Brainfest at Bendersville Elementary School on Saturday, March 16 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. This is a fun event full of activities designed to challenge thinking skills. Stations include “Spaghetti and Marshmallow Structures” where students have to build the highest tower using the least amount of materials, “Build a Baby” where team members use clay to create one section of a baby, such as head, body, arms, or legs, and then put them all together, “Float the Boat” where participants use a piece of aluminum foil to create a boat that will float while holding 50 pennies, and many more! Students will have a wonderful time working with friends, parents, and grandparents to solve the challenges. Additionally, 5th and 6th graders will participate in the “Great Egg Drop” challenge to see if they gain status on “The Great Egg Drop Wall of Fame.” Hope to see you there!

Career Day

Career Day for 6th grade is almost here! This year Career Day will be held in the afternoon on Friday, March 22nd at Bendersville Elementary School. Sixth grade students from both Arendtsville and Bendersville will have the opportunity to learn about various careers from volunteers in our community. A permission slip will be sent home prior to this event so that your child may travel to Bendersville Elementary School for this event. We are looking forward to a fun-filled day!

Students Jump Rope for AHA

The students of Arendtsville Elementary School jump roped at the chance to fight heart disease the week of February 4-12, 2019. The students raised money for the American Heart Association during their Physical Education classes. With a combined effort, 15 of our students raised $1,325.00. This money will benefit the American Heart Association. Arendtsville's top fundraiser for this event was Savannah Dugan (grade 5) who collected $310. Great job, Apaches!

Cultural Arts Day 2019

The annual Cultural Arts Days Festivals, hosted by the Upper Adams School District Elementary Fine Arts Team (pictured), took place at Arendtsville Elementary on February 21. This year's cultural peoples of the world were Africans and African Americans. All elementary students rotated among several stations and enjoyed African or African-American related art projects, music, dance, games, food sampling and storytelling. Fun was had by all. Be sure to ask your child all about this day!! “This program was supported by The Friends on Bear Mountain, and the parent organizations at Arendtsville Bendersville, and Biglerville Elementary Schools. Thank you for making these Cultural Arts Days possible. Thanks also to Mr. Ebbert, Mrs. Ratay, and Mrs. Lobaugh for helping at stations during the festivals.”

Student Council News

Wow, we have been busy! During our meetings in January, we made Valentines for the residents at Gettysburg Center, a local nursing home (see pictures above). We also dressed in our favorite team jerseys to cheer for the Super Bowl on Friday, February 1st. In February, we made bracelets for JDA, Jewelry Designs by Angels. The bracelets are given to families grieving the loss of a newborn child. We also helped to raise money for The Four Diamonds Fund, by leading a change drive. During the month of March, Student Council will be busy filling plastic eggs for the Upper Adams Jaycee's Easter Egg hunt. Of course we also have some fun spirit activities planned in honor of St. Patrick's Day. Be sure to dress in green on March 15th to show your Irish spirit!

From the Nurse:

If your child has not already had their physical for 6th grade completed, please do so before the end of the school year. If you have signed your child up for a school physical, please remember that they still need to go to their family doctor to have their updated immunizations given before the start of 7th grade. Need another form? Mrs. Smyers has more available in her office or you can print one off of the school website. For any questions, you can reach Mrs. Smyers by phone at 717-677- 4300 or by email at k.smyers@upperadams.org

Go for the Gold with Box Tops

We've just finished our winter challenge and in just a few short weeks we collected a little over 3100 Box Tops! Kids earned the materials to make snowmen and then worked on teams to bring their snow displays to life. The kids had fun with this challenge as you can see from the picture, below. Congratulations to our challenge winners: Team Wilkinson, Kump, and Mclean for the best display; and to Mrs. Shaffer's class, for turning in the most box tops!!

Pease remind all your friends, family members, neighbors, co-workers, etc., to Keep on Clipping Box Tops for your child because we have more fun challenges planned for the remainder of the year!! For every sheet turned in, your child will receive a gold coin to spend on something in Captain Buckley's Treasure Trove. The more coins your child collects, the bigger their collection of loot can become! Reminder: all money raised through our Box Tops Collection is used to fund our end-of-year behavior reward trips.
