Principal's Message/ Mensaje de la directora:
Believe it or not we are half way through our first trimester already. It is such a beautiful sight to see our students in the school excited and ready to learn. One of our school work goals is to craft powerful partnerships. Over the past week, I have witnessed families stepping in to support one another in wonderful ways that epitomize this goal. In one example I saw a group of parents consoling an upset mom whose child was struggling to transition back into school. The parents offered to set up play dates for the kids and to meet up so that their children can both become more and more comfortable at school. In another example, I saw a veteran Willard parent introduce herself to a new family, share contact information, and then make herself available as a local connection as the family acclimates to the community.
These are just a few examples of Powerful Partnerships that our parents and school community are living daily. Although the school year is different, I welcome the opportunity to grow our partnerships and to grow the opportunities that are available for our students and our families.
A huge shout out to our PTA! They planned an amazing Hispanic Heritage Event last Friday. The food was delicious (Thank You Tamalito) and the activities were a beautiful representation of Latinx cultures.
As we work to build Powerful Partnerships I want to welcome you to join me for a Principal Coffee Chat, that I will host 2x a month (1x= morning & 1x = afternoon). These coffee chats will provide an opportunity for families to connect, ask questions, gain understanding around programming, and to build relationships. I look forward to the work that we have ahead of us to build and to craft a wonderful school year.
Have a Fantastic Weekend.

During this time, students are grouped according to their Math MAP scores & their MAP fluency/reading scores.
The acceleration block instructional time allows our team members to strategically address students skills gaps or areas of needed acceleration.
To maximize instructional time we have the following staffing resources available:
- Students who are in the 0-15th%ile: work with our interventionist.
- Students who are in the 16-25th%ile: will work with our classroom teachers in small groups.
- Students who are in the 26-50th%ile: will work with our Academic skills tutors.
- Students who are in the 51-99th%ile: will work with their classroom teacher.
Students who receive Special Education services work with their Sp.ed. case manager during this time. To ensure that we are supporting our bilingual students, we have a bilingual tutor who will service students.
COVID-19
COVID Shield Testing
COVID testing began on Thursday and we were able to make it through all of our students. Some things to know about this process:
Students receive a tube and are spaced out in the auditorium every other seat & every other row( windows are open). They fill up their tube & then turn it in to the COVID Shield testers.
Students who were not able to produce enough saliva were sent back to class after 15-20 minutes, they will be able to try again next week. Students are not able to take the test within an hour of eating, therefore our schedule is very tight so ensure we get all students tested prior to their lunch time.
Now that we know what the process looks like, we are working to set up a safer, more efficient COVID testing system.
All students are tested with the exception of those who have submitted their OPT-OUT form.
Please see the latest updates from the IDPH & CDC guidelines that we are following as a district regarding COVID regulations:
Last week, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) provided schools with updated guidance on quarantines, positive COVID-19 cases, and the return to school after being sick. Parents/caregivers should continue to keep their children home and monitor for 24 hours if the child presents with any COVID-19 and/or flu symptoms.
If symptoms do not resolve within 24 hours, students must be tested for COVID-19, within 48 hours of the onset of their symptoms. According to new guidance, students and staff must be symptom free and provide proof of a negative PCR test to the health clerk before returning to school (regardless of vaccination status).
If the student is out sick for three or more days, the District requires a note from your doctor with an alternative diagnosis and a negative, (not home kit), COVID-19 test for readmission to school. Please note if your child is out of school because they tested positive for COVID-19, it is not necessary to get a doctor’s note. The school will send confirmation to the parents/caregiver when the student may return to school.
As a reminder, students and staff must be fever-free for 24 hours, without the use of medication, before returning to school/work and return 48 hours after vomiting or diarrhea has resolved. Please DO NOT administer fever-reducing medication before sending your child to school. Often when the body is fighting the infection, a fever is a sign they may have a cold or the flu. Please note that your child should not be in school if they are fighting off an infection or virus; they should be monitored at home for worsening symptoms.
If a student is not tested or does not provide proof of a negative test, they must remain out of school for 10 calendar days. Students may participate in learning during this time through a Quarantine Remote Classroom. COVID-19 like symptoms include the following:
- fever (100.4 or higher)
- new onset of moderate to severe headache
- shortness of breath
- new cough
- sore throat
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- new loss of sense of taste or smell
- fatigue from unknown cause
- muscle or body aches from unknown cause
The symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to most of our seasonal illnesses. It is understood that there is a possibility that your child may experience seasonal allergies around this time of the year. However, the new IDPH guidance requires that any student with the aforementioned symptoms get tested to ensure safe entry into schools. Free testing sites can be found at the IDPH website at dph.illinois.gov/testing.
Communication Protocol
When we receive notification of a COVID Positive case the following steps are followed:
The health clerk & district nurse are notified.
They confirm Symptom dates, the positive test date, & quarantine timelines with the parents/ guardians.
School Administration is informed & begins contract tracing.
Individuals who had Close Contact to the COVID Positive individual are informed via email & a physical letter is sent home.
Families/ students/staff are ONLY notified when they are a direct contact to the COVID positive individual.
In order to ensure confidentiality we are not able to share medical information or specific details.
As a school team we are diligent about COVID-19 safety, therefore we maintain 3 feet apart in the classrooms & we ensure that everyone is wearing a mask on the school premises, & that sanitation is being completed consistently.
If you are coming to pick up your child early or to drop them off, please scan the QR code on the front door to self-certify before entering the building.
PLEASE SEE THE D65 COVID DASHBOARD TO READ MORE ABOUT THE COVID-19 PROCEDURES THAT WE ARE ALL FOLLOWING.
