Salk Seahawk Scoop
Week of 10/2/22
A Note From the Principal
Dear Salk Families,
I want to thank all of you for sharing your children with me this past month! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them and meeting many of you. This month has reminded me how very much I loved my years at Salk…it is a special place to be. I truly will miss your children’s smiling faces!
I also want to thank the Salk staff for all they do each day to support learning and to provide a child centered environment. The heart of a school is the teachers who are with your children every day. Your kids are in good hands!
And finally, I want to thank all those who provided support to me every day. There are so many at Salk who were ready and willing to help with whatever was needed. There were also many at the district level who helped me in so many ways and to whom I owe a big thank you!
I will look back on this past month with fond memories of my time with your children and the Salk community. Your involvement in your children’s education is so important to the success of a school and a district! Thank you all for giving me this special opportunity!

Canvas Learning Management Parent Information
As you know, this year all students, grades Young 5s-12 began using Canvas, a learning management system that replaced BlackBoard and itsLearning. We are excited for the opportunity to have a consistent system for families to access student learning. At the secondary level (Grades 7-12), parents will also be able to see student assignments and grades at the same time.
We have worked for the last year to prepare for this transition. Classroom teachers are using Canvas to provide instruction, resources, activities, and assessments for students.
Students have also been using Canvas, and we will be launching the parent component this Monday, October 3. With your parent account, you will be able to easily view the assignments and grades for your student(s).
Please look for another email Monday with the instructions to create your account. We will also host two parent webinars to walk through all Canvas can do. Please try to attend whichever session fits your schedule. They should last about an hour.

Attendance Matters
This year, we're working hard to advance student success by reducing chronic absenteeism. At the end of each month, our team will be reviewing student attendance and will be setting up meetings with families whose students have missed 10% of our school days. During these meetings, we will be creating success plans in an effort to help improve student attendance.
Students who miss 2 days of school in September often go on to become chronically absent. To maintain satisfactory attendance and to create good attendance habits that can last a lifetime, students should strive to miss no more than 9 days per year (or less than 1 day per month).
