The Counselor's Corner
This month in Counseling, all students will be learning about diversity. In each grade level, we will be focused on the following:
Kindergarten through 2nd grade
Identifying differences and similarities in others.
Understanding how we can be friendly even when we are different.
Know that it is not okay to ever leave someone out because they are different.
How to speak up or do something if people are being unfair (which includes telling an adult), even if your friends do it.
Showing appreciation for being unique and feeling good about ourselves, without having to make others feel bad.
3rd grade
How to tell when people are treated unfairly.
Feeling good about our identify without making someone else feel bad about who they are.
Asking questions about other people’s lives and experiences respectfully and listening non-judgmentally.
Standing up for ourselves and for others, and understanding how to get help if we need ideas on how to do this.
4th grade
How to speak up or do something when we see unfairness, and not letting others convince us to go along with unkind or unfair behaviors.
How to use respectful words to describe how we are similar or different from people who share same identities and those who have other identities.
Finding ways to interfere if someone is being hurtful or unkind, and how to do our best to show respect, even if we disagree with someone’s words or behavior.
5th grade
When someone is treated unfairly or unkindly because of the way they look that could be considered racism.
The words racism and racist are serious terms. They are not words that should be used in a joking manner.
There are many ways people can peacefully interrupt mean behavior and acts. Speaking up assertively, reporting the actions, and showing kindness to everyone are a few examples.
How to work with my friends and family to make our school and community fair for everyone, and work hard and cooperate in order to achieve our goals.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call or email me at any time.

Technology Tips and Tricks
Scratch & Scratch Jr.
Scratch uses a programming language and is an online community where children can program and share interactive media such as stories, games, and animation with people from all over the world. As children create with Scratch, they learn to think creatively, work collaboratively, and reason systematically. Scratch is a great website or app that allows children to learn computer coding. Scratch is available for children 8 and up online for free. Scratch Jr. is an app for children 5 to 7 and available in any app store for free.
Computer Science Education Week is December 9-15th. Pershing students will be engaging with different coding activities during Computer class with Ms. Ebert, including Hour of Code.
Pershing Nurse News
Messages from the Health Office!
We want to remind families to continue to monitor their students for illness as we enter the winter months: Ill students who stay home help keep our school Healthy! This time of year is also a good time to revisit good hand washing and “sneeze in your sleeve” practices at home. Know that we are also working with your student on it at school too! Thank you.
Thank you! Nurse Farrow, and Nurse Amy
