September 6, 2019
Colts,
Our short four day week was packed at CMS with a lot of great academics and extracurricular activities during the week. Our Volleyball teams began their season with homes games being cheered on by our cheerleaders and packed stands of Colt fans.
As you all know by the notifications sent out to our CMS community, in addition to Dr. Ryan's email, we unfortunately had to pivot from our regularly scheduled activities towards the end of the day today. I am very proud of how calm and efficient our students, staff, and campus visitors handled today's lockout. As Dr. Ryan mentioned in his email, the safety and security of all on our campuses is our top priority. As always, thank you for your partnership together for our Colts.

8th Grade Parent Meeting for All Middle Schools at the PDEC on September 18th at 6 P.M.
Middle school counselors are excited to start high school planning with our current 8th grade students. This future planning is in accordance with House Bill 5. In order to begin this decision-making process, all 8th grade parents are invited to the PDEC on Wednesday, September 18th at 6pm to learn exactly what the planning entails. Middle school counselors will present to families about endorsements, four year plans, and more. Each middle school campus will be in a different room at PDEC. Plus, the Collegiate Academy counselor and GHS and CHHS counselors will be present for support as well. After this meeting, middle school counselors will begin individual planning with each of their 8th grade students. This individual planning will be complete by the start of the 2nd semester. We look forward to seeing our 8th grade families on September 18th!
ABSENCES
In order to expedite your attendance needs, please speak with the attendance clerk, Amy Edgell, or leave a detailed voicemail message directly at (817) 305-4904 instead of leaving a message on the main line or with a receptionist. Our attendance clerk will receive the voicemail and process it in a timely manner.
Another way to communictae with Ms. Edgell directly is via email at amy.edgell@gcisd.net to inform her of the absence and that email will be used as a parent note.
If your student is absent and communication with her has not been made, an automated telephone call will inform you of your student’s absence. If you receive an automated telephone call that your student was marked absent in class and feel this was done in error, please have your student talk/email the teacher about the absence to resolve the error.
If a parent does not call or email regarding the absence, please send a note to Attendance the day your student returns to school. If no contact is made, the student will have an unexcused absence.
Please remember to send in doctor notes to Attendance for any absences due to medical related visits. If your student does not bring the doctor note to school, you may also email it or send it via fax (817) 498-9764. Thank you.

ALL STUDENTS
Signs of Suicide (SOS):
During the month of September the CMS Counselors will be leading guidance lessons for all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students from the SOS (Signs of Suicide) curriculum that has been approved by the district. Students will learn how to respond to a friend who may need extra support. One tool they will gain is the acronym ACT.
A: Acknowledge the problem;
C: Care. Let the person know you care; and
T: Tell a responsible adult.
Counselors will also discuss the difference between sadness and depression.
If you were unable to attend one of the preview meetings offered this past month, you can find information about the SOS curriculum and view the SOS videos using the link below. If you would like for your child to opt out of the SOS presentation, fill out and return the opt out form linked below to your child’s counselor by Sept. 9, 2019.
