Every Minute Matters: Part 4
August
Every Minute Matters
We love our new theme, and how reminiscent it is of our very mission: helping children learn. At CLIU #21, every minute with our students matters. Every second we can spend teaching, understanding, and being present with them is another second that we've made a difference in their lives.
Annie Sullivan Award Winners
Congratulations to our Annie Sullivan Award winners this year: Linda Humanick and Michele Kulp! Dr. Eib spoke about all the great things they do for the kids before presenting them the award. Linda and Michele make an amazing team at our transportation office, decorating their bus for the kids and making each day special for them. Thank you for all you do!
Staff cookout!
While the sun was still shining, we celebrated another successful school year! This staff cookout was a fun one. We enjoyed hot dogs and burgers off the grill, and teachers were able to sit in the sunshine with one another to enjoy lunch.
September
Muhlenberg Student Teachers come to CLIU
Aspiring teachers entering student teaching came to the CLIU to learn about what to expect in the classroom, methods of teaching, lesson planning and other tips that can be useful in the field. This group was excited to learn about what's to come!
New faces at Work-Based Learning
New year, new work- based learning students! These students are selected for the program by showing a high level of responsibility and skill. We are pleased to have a new set of faces at work based learning this year to serve up tasty lunches!
Joint Council explores at DaVinci Center
Our Joint Council consists of district leaders from Carbon and Lehigh counties. For the month of September, Joint Council met at the DaVinci Center in Allentown, where they were able to explore and see the benefits of taking student groups to the center.
In the classroom
Playing with instruments during morning meeting shakes up the average routine.
Working hard on an assignment, but still all smiles!
Focusing intently on this model plane before its launch across the gym.
October
Fall fun at Grim's
Students picked apples and pumpkins at Grim's Orchard on this sunny fall day! Center-based learning like this encourages multi-sensory learning through stimuli such as Grim's corn shed, slide, water pump racers, and play yard.
Tech Wizards make robot arms
At Tech Wizards latest meeting, groups were tasked with creating robot arms using basic office supplies such as paper clips, masking tape, scissors and more. The arm had to function properly, and was tested through attempts to pick up a plastic cup. In doing this, students had to make their brain sweat by using engineering and reasoning skills.
Apple picking at Strawberry Acres
This small class made the most of their time at Strawberry Acres! Students were able to feed goats and pigs, swing on the play set, participate in a hayride, and of course, pick apples and pumpkins! The kids also met Johnny Appleseed, and learned about the evolution of apples through the seasons.
Take a peek!
This video gives our Enhanced Autism program teachers a chance to talk about how they work with our students and use different methods of teaching in the classroom. Traveling in the community, working on life skills, and learning how to cope in daily situations is part of the work these classes do with autistic students. Tools they use include sensory rooms, swings, and individual work spaces.
