ART CLUB
It’s time to sign up for Art Club! As in years past, Art Club will be divided by grade level. Each grade level will meet twice before school to create one extra art project. Meetings will be before school from 7:45-8:45am and will take place on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Specific dates will be announced to selected students by January 31st. I have over 700 students, so I will narrow down the enrollment for Art Club by holding a lottery.
If students have returned their permission slip on time, I will enter their name in a drawing. I will select 25 students per grade level. I will draw first from students who have never been a member of Art Club in the past. This is to ensure that most students who are interested in Art Club will be a part of it before they leave New Britton Elementary. If there are extra places available, students who were in Art Club in previous years will be included in a second drawing to fill any remaining spots. Please turn in a permission slip even if you were a part of Art Club in a previous year and would like to be again. I will send home a list of actual meeting dates with only those students that were selected in the lottery process. If you don’t get a note sent home with the meeting dates, you were not selected in the lottery and therefore, are not a member of Art Club this year.
Please send the bottom portion (form below) back to school with your child by January 27, 2020.
Thanks!

Executive Functioning Workshop
Parents and caregivers are invited to an evening session hosted by HSE Schools to explore executive skills development in their children and teens. Executive skills are critical to the acquisition of academic skills, but, more importantly, they are the skills students need to get things done. They are brain-based skills such as task initiation, sustained attention, working memory, planning, organization, and goal-directed persistence that are critical to school success. Some students seem to acquire them naturally, but many students struggle with them. Dr. Peg Dawson, co-author of the books Smart but Scattered and Smart but Scattered Teens, will describe how these skills develop throughout childhood and suggest strategies parents can use to help children acquire the critical skills they need to be successful students. Personal Safety for Children - Week of January 13
The Indiana Center for PREVENTION of Youth Abuse and Suicide will be presenting to all NBE students during the week of January 13. As a community, we must think of childhood sexual abuse as a preventable disease. Collaboration between educators, parents and guardians, child advocates, the medical community, law enforcement and our communities-at-large can proactively protect our children before abuse ever happens. Indiana Center for the Prevention of Youth Abuse and Suicide (formerly Chaucie’s Place) will be visiting our school soon to participate in this collaborative effort. The Child Lures - Think first and stay safe curriculum will be presented to the students. Providing relevant, balanced and proven prevention strategies to families and children increases awareness and knowledge of how to recognize, interrupt, stop and prevent these crimes.
For K-6 (elementary) the body safety program will cover:
· Using our brains to keep us safe
· Bullying
· Body safety and the idea “my body belongs to me.”
· Brainstorm trusted adults
· The difference between secrets and surprises
· Trusting our “guts” or innate feelings
· The idea that everyone is special
*****As a parent if you do not want your child to participate, please contact the school counselor (Mrs. Sherri Leiner sleiner@hse.k12.in.us) for the opt-out form.
