January 2023- Enon Elementary School
Principal's Message
Dear Enon Families:
Happy New Year! We've had a great first week back at Enon. Our students have been hard at work and are demonstrating their Enon PRIDE. This month we are kicking off a new Enon PRIDE contest called the "Golden Gator" during lunch time. We are encouraging great cafeteria manners and our Enon PRIDE and will select 1-2 classes each day per grade to win the "golden gator". Classes who earn the most golden gators at the end of the month can earn either an extra recess or lunch with the principal per their choice. We will have one winner per grade.
We are also wanting to encourage strong school attendance as we kick off 2023. It is so important that your child is here on all healthy days so that they don't miss instructional time. Please support us by having your child here on time to learn. At home students can work on Imagine Math (help your child learn those math facts by heart!), Lexia and Dreambox to sharpen their skills.
This month we are completing our PALS (Reading) testing in grades K-2 and some 3rd graders. We are also giving the SOL Winter Growth tests to our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders to measure our progress in math and reading. We end Quarter 2 on Jan. 20th and have an Early Release Day for a teacher workday on Monday, Jan. 23rd. Our dismissal will be at 12:55 pm that day. Report cards will be sent home on Monday, Feb. 6th. Although we do not have regularly scheduled parent conferences like we do after Quarter 1, remember you are always able to request a conference from your child's teacher if you would like to do so.
We are also still working to close some of our learning gaps from the pandemic and will be offering some additional tutoring opportunities for some of our students in grades 3-5 in order to provide instructional support prior to our Spring SOL time. We will be inviting selected students over the next few weeks for this program which will begin soon. You will receive a letter from me if your child is selected to participate.
Our second grade students will be participating our Swim RVA lessons beginning in February. We will be sending home information to 2nd grade families this week but I wanted our families to be aware of the parent information night on Jan. 25th at 6:00 pm at Hopewell Community Center. There will be additional information in this week's packet. We also look forward to our School Dance on Jan. 27th and our 5th Grade Winter Concert on Jan. 30th!
As always, thank you for being such a supportive community. We appreciate your partnership.
In Service,
Dr. Paula Huffman

Resource Classes Corner
Here's what's going on in Enon Resource Classes this month!
On Jan 30th, our fifth graders will present their winter concert. We hope you will come and join us for a night of beautiful music. During the month of January, the fourth graders will practice reading note names on the treble staff in preparation for their recorder unit. The third and second grade students will complete a unit on the instruments of the orchestra. And the first grade and kindergarten students will take a look at the orchestra by learning the story of Peter and the Wolf.
Art:
In Ms. Utzinger's class
In December, K & 1st started learning about primary colors. They also worked on creating cool color spiral backgrounds for a snowman winter scene. 2nd & 3rd grade learned about radial symmetry. They created symmetrical snowflake paintings using cool colors that will be on display at the January 5th grade music concert. 4th & 5th graders began sketching ideas for faux stained glass winter scenes. They will use black glue and chalk pastels to complete the project when we return in January.
Mrs. Gunn’s classes in January will be using a variety of mediums to learn about Martin Luther King Jr., Chinese Lunar New Year, and Aurora Borealis. The welcome back week we will go over classroom rules and proper handling of materials as well as clean up procedures.
K & 1st will be exploring creativity through activity stations.
All classes will use word art to create a collaborative hall display using words from Martin Luther King Jr’s. I have a dream speech.
We will create artwork celebrating Chinese Lunar New Year, year of the Rabbit.
And we will round out the month learning about Aurora Borealis and create images based on Folklore about the Northern lights.

SOL Winter Growth Test
Last year, the Virginia General Assembly passed legislation §22.1-253.13:3 changing the way schools measure learning for elementary and middle school students in reading and math. Previously, students completed a single Standards of Learning test to measure academic performance at the end of the school year. With this new legislation, students in grades 3-8 will take new SOL growth assessments this fall and winter in addition to traditional spring SOL tests. This will allow parents and teachers to see how students progress throughout the year in reading and math.
The state requires that all students in grades 3-8 take the fall and winter growth assessments in reading and math with the exception of middle school students enrolled in algebra or geometry. All students will take traditional SOL tests this spring for reading and math; selected grade levels will also take science, social studies and/or writing SOL tests at the end of the school year. The purpose of fall testing is to identify the starting point of each student’s learning for the new school year; there is no reason for students to prepare or study for the fall test in any way. The fall and winter growth assessments and spring SOL tests are computer adaptive, and they will use similar types of questions. Fall and winter tests will be shorter than spring tests. The state also requires that all students test at school under the supervision of school staff, so no remote testing options will be available.
Your child is scheduled to take the new SOL growth assessments during the weeks of Jan. 9th and 17th. Specific dates are listed below. You can help by ensuring that your child arrives at school promptly on the testing days with plenty of rest the night before and a good breakfast that morning.
