Swansboro High School
Information for Seniors
Good Evening Seniors and Parents of Seniors,
It's October which means it's time to get serious about college applications and next steps for our graduates. No one could have anticipated that we would be out of school at this time due to the impact of Hurricane Florence but at Swansboro High School we have taken steps to ensure our seniors still have the resources and support they need for success.
While everyone is ready to get back to school, we encourage our seniors and parents of seniors to take advantage of this time to manage the college application process and to maximize these days out of school. Seniors should be working on college applications, letters of recommendations, scholarship applications, registering and practicing for the upcoming free SAT offerings and completing community service and volunteer opportunities. This flyer includes links and information to help with that process:
- The student services department along with teachers of seniors will be available to provide college application support on Monday, October 8, 2018. Sessions will be held at Swansboro Methodist Church from 9-11 am or the Swansboro Parks and Recreation building from 1-3 pm or 4-6 pm. We will offer additional sessions later in the week based on feedback from students and parents.
- The FAFSA applications opened on October 1, 2018. Don't delay on completing this application. It is time consuming and students need parent assistance and information to successfully complete the application. There are 2 upcoming opportunities for help with the FAFSA in our communty. There will be a session on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 from 5:30-7:30 pm at the Jacksonville Public Library and another on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at the Sneads Ferry Public Library. You can also complete it independently at: www.fafsa.ed.gov
- Make a final list of schools you are interested in attending and double check deadlines and admission requirements for each school The week of October 15-19, 2018 is the NC Countdown to College free application fee week. Click here for a list of participating colleges: https://nccountdowntocollege.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/nc-college-application-fees-for-c2c-2018.pdf

- Participate in an SAT prep course online or at school. We will offer a course the week of October 29-November 2 but you can also practice online with resources such as the Khan Academy at: https://www.khanacademy.org/test-prep/sat/full-length-sat-1
- Use your time to complete your college essays and be sure to ask your English teachers at SBHS to read and make recommendations for improvement. The Common Application essay prompts are listed in the two links below along with some suggestions on how to get started and a few sample prompts: https://www.commonapp.org/whats-appening/application-updates/common-application-announces-2017-2018-essay-prompts
- Research and submit scholarship applications. Opportunities are endless and this is a great use of your time while we wait for school to resume.
- Plan on visiting the Onslow County College Fair on October 23, 2018 at Northside High School from 6:00-8:00 pm. We will offer bus service for students who need transportation. Students can sign up for transportation from Swansboro High to Northside High at: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=2oj0MM90xkqfNEBYMyDapI14msEKMxRElyua-wd6_F5UQUQ2QUtSTVlKNTZaNkhIV0lCSVlRQTVBTi4u
- Volunteer in our community and keep track of your hours and your experiences. Our students have experienced hardships and have supported one another through a very difficult time. They have a story to tell about community, service and character on scholarship applications and on college applications. Our community continues to need our support in rebuilding and these days out of school should be spent giving back.
