Readers' Workshop~
- As readers, we read and discussed several Thanksgiving books such as Run, Turkey, Run and T'was the Night Before Thanksgiving. We also viewed and discussed a few Thanksgiving stories on line such as, Turkey Trouble.
- To help bring more awareness about diversity, we read and discussed The Crayon Box That Talked. We then drew a picture of one of our favorite things using only one color. Then, we drew the same picture and added lots of color. We talked about how having lots of colors makes the picture more interesting and fun!
Writers' Workshop~
- During Writers' Workshop, we completed written responses to a few of the stories we read this week.
- We made I Am Thankful For... Turkeys listing the top three things we are thankful for. Check out the completed Turkey display below.
- Also, during Grammar, we learned more about Action Verbs.
Mathematicians~
- As Mathematicians, we learned how to use an addition and subtraction chart. We also learned about related facts and fact families. Within a fact family are three related numbers. For example, 8, 3, & 11 are all related facts. Their fact family has 2 addition and 2 subtraction number sentences that contain only those related numbers: 8+3=11; 3+8=11; 11-3=8; and 11-8=3.
- We also learned how to use dominoes to make related fact family number sentences.
Science~
- As Scientists, we experimented with separating different sized food particles without using our hands. Specifically, we had a mixture of Lima beans, Pinto beans, Mung beans, Rice, and Cornmeal. We explored ways to separate each part of the mixture without using our hands.
- We learned that screens with different sized holes, can help us separate the "soup mixture" into each of their individual groupings. For example, to separate the Pinto Beans and the Lima Beans, we used the screen with the biggest wholes. The rice, cornmeal, and mung beans slipped through the screen. To separate the corn meal from the mixture, we used the screen with the smallest holes so that only the Cornmeal would go through the holes. Finally, we used the medium sized screen to separate the mung beans from the rice. Be sure to check out our experiment photos below.
Social Studies~
- During Social Studies, we compared and contrasted how people of the Colonial Times lived, worked, and played. We compared the Colonial Times with how we live, work, and play today!
- We completed a Scholastic News learning about the Wampanoag Indians and the Pilgrims. We viewed videos about how both groups of people live. Then, we learned about the Pilgrim's journey to American and how the Wampanoag Indians, under the leadership of Tisquantum, helped the Pilgrims settle into their new land. We also learned more about the First Thanksgiving.
Other Activities~
- We attended a school-wide Community Meeting!
- Valerie Klentak received the "Respectful" Word of the Month Award. Way to go, Valerie!
