SAB: Where are They Now?
Hear from former SAB members and Texas Tech Alumni!
SAB is Dedicated to the Success of Students
We thought it would be a great idea to highlight some of the student successes we see everyday within the SAB organization. We see a diverse group of students at events and work with them day in and day out.
We took the chance to interview a student who was very involved with our organization and worked hard at Texas Tech while doing so.
We now would like to share his experience with you!
We are so proud of Akin and what he has done for SAB and what he continues to do after graduating.
Read further along to hear about Akin's Texas Tech experience and beyond!
Things to know about Akin:
Akin was an international student from Nigeria. While at Texas Tech, he majored in computer engineering and minored in math. Akin was a SAB member for 3 years before graduating in December of 2019.
Akin's Time with SAB:
When Akin joined SAB, he became a general member for 2 years where he helped propose new events and volunteered his time working events. He was then elected by his peers in the fall of 2018 to serve as the Outreach Coordinator.
The Outreach Coordinator position focuses on community involvement and serving the local Lubbock area.
He then was selected for a Research Fellowship, which collaborated between Texas Tech and Teradyne. They focused on expanding new products, and developed research on RND for their product development.
If becoming a coordinator and conducting research weren't enough, Akin also accepted an internship in Wisconsin in the Spring of 2019 where he interned for 7 months as a Software Test Engineer. He worked with developing software for testing diesel engines.
As he kept very busy with preparing himself for a career after graduation, Akin was still a vital part of SAB's success. Most members could agree that he brought unity to any event he volunteered with.
Akin After Graduation:
We take pride in how we keep up with our students outside of the organization and have made relationships that flourish long after these Red Raiders leave Lubbock. Akin is no different.
After graduating in December of 2019, he accepted a Corporate IT Specialist position in Buffalo, New York. He became the middleman between the corporation and IT.
We know what you're thinking, he is unstoppable! We couldn't agree more. Akin embodies what it means to be a SAB member and a Red Raider to go out in the world and accomplish anything.
Currently, Akin now works as a Firmware Engineer in Boston, Massachusetts. The company he works for makes fitness trackers. Akin specializes in programming the computer processors in the fitness strap.
The company, Whoop, is a startup that has been developing technologies for the betterment of health and fitness for 8 years.
Akin is proud of the work he is doing. "There is a direct impact I can see on the people around me," said Akin. "Health is wealth."
What has SAB done for Akin?:
We love telling SAB students that every experience within the organization is what you make it. You can choose to volunteer as much or as little as you prefer and even challenge yourself to tackle leadership positions, like Akin.
Akin's experience has allowed him to expand beyond his "engineering bubble." He says, "I have gotten to make new experiences and meet new people that I wouldn't have met from engineering."
"I gained interdepartmental skills that have helped me interact with a completely diverse bubble. I got to meet more people and be social."
Why should students join SAB?
We think every student can benefit in different ways from being involved with the Student Activities Board, whether that's becoming a member or simply attending the free events.
Akin shares why he thinks a student should join the organization. "I tell international students to join because they're skeptical to join organizations that may be unwelcoming. SAB is welcoming to people from all over the world," he said.
"I was included. SAB has people of different religions, cultures and more and I have always been welcomed."
