GRE Family Gazette
September 30, 2019
Dear GRE Families,
We had a super fun, super busy week at GRE! All throughout our school students are busy learning and connecting with each other. Thank you to all our families who have supported our Mumkins Sale. As a reminder, Mumkin pick up is October 8th!
This week we have our second round of Parent Teacher Conferences on Wednesday evening from 4:00-8:00. We will also have the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium here on Friday! This will be our first assembly of the school year. It's going to be a toasty week but I'm sure we will pack it full of fun!
Here's to a great week!

We are looking to bring some new artists to GRE to work with our students and looking for any connections you may have in our community! On Art Day students have the opportunity to work with both a VISUAL artist to make something and a PERFORMING artist to learn how to do something.
If you are an artist or you have any connections to a visual or performing artist who you think would be interested, PLEASE share them through this GRE Art Day- Artist Connections link!
Special Spotlight: Music with Mrs. Wood
Greetings from the music room! We’ve had a great start of the year exploring many wonderful things about music. See below for more specifics from each grade level.
Kindergarten:
Students are learning about the difference between our singing voice, speaking voice, and chanting voice. Students have also been working on maintaining a steady beat, and are beginning to sing and chant short tonal and rhythm patterns.
Music Playlist:
Ask your child to sing or chant: Sally Go Round the Sun, Open Shut Them, or ask them how to play the game “Simon Sings”
1st Grade:
Students are beginning to chant patterns in duple meter with rhythm syllables. They are learning how to play non pitched percussion instruments such as the drums, maracas, ratchet, bells, sand blocks, and tambourines while maintaining a steady beat.
Music Playlist:
Ask your student to sing or chant: My Name is Joe, Sing Hooray for GRE, and Cabin in a Wood
2nd Grade:
Students are learning how to sing, chant, and play instruments in harmony, where two or more parts of a song are performed at the same time. Students have also been learning patriotic songs for our Veteran’s Day assembly, which is Friday, November 8th. We will be sending home more information about this performance soon!
Music Playlist:
Ask your student to sing or chant: This Land is Your Land, A Horse and a Bumble Bee, Little Red Caboose
3rd Grade:
Students are performing folk dances, singing songs in other languages, and reading and labeling notes on the staff. One of our songs features nine ways to sing hello in other languages!
Music Playlist:
Ask your student to sing: Hello to all the Children of the World, Frog in the Meadow, Somebody’s Knocking at Your Door
4th Grade:
Students just began our ukulele unit where they are learning about parts of the instrument, holding position, basic strumming patterns, and one chord songs. They are creating rhythm patterns in duple meter to use as strumming patterns to accompany songs.

Funga Alafia, Star Light, John the Rabbit, Wolf, Rain,Rain, Bow Wow Wow
Important Dates:
Friday, November 8th at 2:30 p.m. is our Veteran’s Day assembly. The second graders will be leading us in song and welcoming our Veterans to GRE. Please consider inviting a veteran to this special event! More information will be sent home soon!
Congrats to our Golden Spatula Winners!
This week we introduced the "Golden Spatula Award" at lunch time. This prize is awarded to one class at each grade level. Throughout the week, we look for students who are following our lunch room expectations. It was awesome to see the kids get so excited-please help us congratulate our winners for the week of September 9th.
