From Mr. Clemente
Dear Winter Park Band families,
Congratulations to our Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Symphony students for their performances this Saturday at our Guest Conductor Workshop Concert! The students gave performances they should be proud of, and we still have two weeks to make them even better leading up to our performances at District Concert MPA on 2/27 and 2/28. Mr. Stice was quite impressed by the hard work and attentiveness of the students all weekend, and had wonderful things to say throughout the workshop.
ATTENDANCE AND COMMUNICATION
Both attendance and communication are two of the foundation pieces of the success of the Winter Park Band program. I would like to express my gratitude to the vast majority of our Winter Park Band families who are wonderful with advanced communication and are understanding that the success of each ensemble depends on the attendance and equal participation of each student in the ensemble. Unfortunately, we had a surprising number of communication and attendance breakdowns concerning the events of the Guest Conductor Workshop this past weekend, including numerous students arriving late to both the sound-checks on stage and the performance call time. Please see below for a refresher from the Band Handbook on the Winter Park Band attendance policy:
Band members are required to attend all rehearsals and performances. As a co-curricular course, rehearsals and performances outside of class time are part of the educational process, and are a graded component. An absence necessitates repeating educational instruction when the student returns, as well as eliminating the opportunity to develop blend, balance, and precision with the other students in the ensemble. Equally as important, students must be on time for all Band functions. Learning to be early now will establish a life skill that is critical to success beyond high school. A complete Band calendar can be found at www.winterparkhsband.com. It is the responsibility of both the students and parents to be aware of Band events.
UNEXCUSED ABSENCE FROM REHEARSAL: Any student receiving an unexcused absence for a rehearsal will receive a zero. Likewise, being tardy to a rehearsal will also result in a lowering of the overall grade based on the severity of the tardiness. An unexcused absence may result in the student being placed on alternate status. It is important that an excused school-day absence (i.e. illness) should be communicated to the high school Attendance Office as quickly as possible. Unexcused school-day absences result in a zero for that day’s rehearsal grade. It is the Attendance Office’s policy that parents submit a written notice to excuse any absence.
TARDY TO REHEARSAL/PERFORMANCE: Attendance will always be taken promptly at the beginning of a rehearsal or performance. A student arriving late will lose points towards their grade. If a student is habitually late for rehearsals, they may be placed on alternate status and the appropriate school discipline policies will be enforced. Any student arriving late for a football game performance will lose their third-quarter break (Marching Band) and may forfeit the opportunity to perform.
ABSENCE FROM PERFORMANCE: Performances are a central focus of the Band Program, and every student is obligated to attend every performance. Severe personal illness, death in the immediate family, and discretion of the directors or building principal will be accepted as legitimate excuses if the directors are notified in advance by the parents/guardians. Please review the Band Calendar online at www.winterparkhsband.com and coordinate with your family calendar. In the event that a student needs to miss a performance for any other non-emergency reason, the parents/guardians must notify both directors at least 60 days prior.
BAND AND EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: With regard to extra-curricular activities (athletics, clubs, etc.): most conflicts between extra-curricular activities and Band can be avoided, or alleviated, when pre-planning is done, and advance notice is given. It is critical for students and parents to coordinate their extra-curricular activity’s schedule with the Band calendar well in advance. When a conflict is unavoidable, the two events will be weighted for “importance.” For example, a Band performance would outweigh an extra-curricular practice/rehearsal. A game would outweigh a Band rehearsal, etc. Again, communication is critical to avoiding conflicts!
Time is one of the most, if not the most, valuable things we have to give, and to give it towards an endeavor such as making music with your peers is such a special opportunity for our students. As directors, Mr. Smith and I are extremely conscious of the impact that outside-of-school rehearsals and performances have on each Band family's schedule. We give the most advanced notice possible for all Band events and activities that we are able, so that all Band families have an opportunity to plan ahead and communicate any anticipated conflicts with the directors as far in advance as possible. Please email both Mr. Clemente (michael.clemente@ocps.net) AND Mr. Smith (daniel.smith2@ocps.net) concerning event conflicts.
Thank you for your attention to our Band policies, your continued dedication to the Winter Park Band, and your constant hard work to make our Band a great place to be for everyone! Together, our outstanding students and parents ARE the Winter Park Band!
Let's have a great week!
