"If I stay. If I leave. It's up to me. How am I supposed to decide this? How can I possibly stay without Mom and Dad? How can I leave without Teddy? Or Adam? This is too much."
In Gayle Forman's If I Stay, Mia and her family get into a devastating car accident that puts her in a coma, and kills her mother and father. Mia realizes when she sees herself at the scene that she is having an out of body experience, but doesn't realize that she has the power to decide if she wakes up from her coma and carries on with her successful life as a cellist, or if she dies and stays with her mom and dad. Mia is very conflicted with this decision, which is why I chose to use the conflict as my literary element. The quote I chose is Mia's realization of the decision she needed to make. This Photo Essay shows Mia's life going from belonging to a happy family to making the most difficult decision of her life.
