Hood River Valley High School
August 10 2023
Welcome to the 2023-24 School Year Hood River Valley High School Eagles!
I realize our summer was a bit shorter this year, but I do hope you were able to find some time to be with family and friends. That being said, I am excited to welcome you back to a new school year filled with new opportunities, growth, and positive changes! This school year we have some exciting updates to share that will create more positive experiences for you.
First and foremost, we're shifting to a semester-based academic calendar, that will help support a balanced load of coursework. This also means we will be reintroducing an 8-period A day B day alternating block schedule. This new schedule will provide you with extended class periods, and this change will also give you more time to engage with the content in your courses.
In addition to this, we're bringing back the advisory period with a few modifications. This group will meet weekly, and students will be paired with a dedicated advisory teacher allowing for connections that will last throughout four years at HRV. We realize how important it is to have someone that students feel safe with and can go to. This mentorship will offer guidance, support, and space to discuss your goals, and challenges. During this time we will also have an opportunity to help students identify an organizational structure that will help achieve their goals. The bell schedule embedded below will help illustrate some of these changes.
Another piece that we recognize is needed, is the importance of more time for individualized academic support, we're thrilled to announce our teacher access time. This unique opportunity allows students to schedule meetings with teachers four times a week, ensuring students receive the additional help and support that may be needed to excel.Teachers will also use this time to proactively address any concerns and tailor their support to individual learning needs. This access time will be called WIN (what individuals need) time.
Although I have just addressed a few changes, there are some components in high school that remain the same and essential. This is the correlation between student engagement and student success. There are many avenues to get involved at HRVHS, and I encourage students to explore the various ways to do this at HRV. There are a myriad of clubs, sports and activities to participate in and be a part of. Once we get started, there will be more opportunities for students to learn more about how to get involved.
For now, there are a few pieces of information and dates for you to keep in mind that I'd like to share so you are ready for the start of the school year. It is coming quickly, and we are all busy preparing for what we know will be a great school year. Please see below for important dates and information.
See you all soon!
