The Vartan Gregorian School Tribune

From the desk of Mr. Russo

September 2019

What a wonderful first week it has been. Our school community has risen to the occassion and embarked on a new journey. While the catalyst for change may have been uncomfortable, we are moving in a new direction. Let me be the first to compliment our teaching staff for navigating through all of the issues surrounding the district. This of course includes some construction that is ongoing at the building. However, as of Tuesday, the only remaining major work is being done outside, on the roof. I have been impressed with everyone's dedication and professionalism.

The first few weeks of school are a time of adjustment for everyone. Our students have adjusted well to being back in school. There have been some new routines that they have had to learn. I've vistited every class to discuss some of these changes. In some of the classes we've discussed some changes that students would like to see. They've had some innovative ideas about recycling, using different lunch trays, field clean up, etc...

A few notes about the first few days of school:

- Our lunch number system has changed. The lines have moved slower than normal, but we have allowed students extra time as needed to finish their lunches. This issue will be short lived.

- Our fifth graders have been given a challenge to rewrite the school pledge. I look forward to reading all of the entries. In fact, we will be choosing the winner today. The pledge will be posted in the next newsletter.

- The first day traffic (indoor and outdoor) was predictably congested. I want to thank parents, students, and teachers for navigating that process in a calm manner. A special shout out to our Kindergarten families, as I know that initial drop off can be extremely difficult.

- The Boy's and Girl's Club will send home information regarding clubs next week.

- The courtyard will be inaccessible while the roof work is taking place. We're looking forward to getting back out there in the spring.

- New mulch in the playground! Thank you to the parents who advocated for this!

- We will start selling Smencils at lunch soon. They are $1 apiece and our first fundraiser that we are having at the school.

Please know that we have an open door policy at Vartan. Please contact me or our PTO if you'd like a tour of the building. We all welcome the opportunity to show off our great school to prosepective or current families.

Bio - Freddy Bucci

Every month, I will profile a member of the Vartan Community. This month, we are getting to know our lead custodian, Freddy.

Freddy has been a part of the Vartan community for 21 years, he has been the lead custodian for the past 18. For eleven of those years, Freddy's mom worked in the Vartan kitchen. That is one of the many reasons he feels so connected to our school.

He clearly takes great pride in his work, as the inside of the building always looks immaculate. I was immediately impressed as Freddy and his team worked hard all summer to make sure the building was going to be ready for our students. On a daily basis, Freddy goes above and beyond, helping every member of the school community with any building needs they have. Freddy even dresses up as the Vartan Fox for our annual Brown kick off.

Freddy is from Providence, having attended Sackett St., Bridgham, before graduating from Mount Pleasant. He is a valued member of our school community.
