A rough diamond is a Diamond in its natural state that no one has cut yet. Cutting a diamond is a multi step process performed on rough diamonds to convert them to gems.
Australia is estimated to have about 16 per cent of the worlds economic demonstrated resources of industrial quality diamonds, and is the sixth largest producer by weight globally.
The average value per carat for Australian diamonds is relatively low by world standards. Belgium is the worlds primary diamond trading and distribution centre.
Currently there are two diamond mines operating in Australia, there are also two major diamond producing companies in Australia. Australians also one of 54 participants in the Kimberley process certification scheme.
