Stoneham Mourns the Loss of Dan Barker: Town Historian
- It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Danny Barker, our town historian, organ player and retired music teacher. We will talk about Danny’s remarkable life and work in the next issue. For now, at this time of Thanksgiving , we can only be grateful for the many years he lived on this planet and served our little town of Stoneham. We send our love and condolences to the whole Barker family and especially to his wife Geneva at this difficult time.

Harbor Seal: Photo by Ralph Fletcher
Along the coast of Maine grew the legend of the Selkie, a fisherman who marries a woman who was really a seal. Perhaps, like the legends about mermaids, they grew out of the reality that a fisherman’s first love is the sea itself. Below is the song about fisherman Peter Kagan by Maine folk singing legend Gordon Bok. Peter learns about his his wife’s true nature the hard way. It is a love story that only a fisherman could tell. The movie by John Sayles called The Secret of Roan Ainish is a wonderful retelling of the same story.
In this remarkable photo by Ralph Fletcher can you see the compassion in the eyes of a seal?

Marilyn Jones Remembers Stoneham
In her memories , Marilyn remembers Trout Lake camp before it was renamed Camp Susan Curtis. Here is a link to the girls sat the camp in East Stoneham called Camp Trebor circa 1969s. It is quite an impressive concert of songs and poetry. Does anyone remember that camp?

Stoneham Party attends Art Opening at Bates
Arch Owen , Geneva and Danny Barker attend the opening of an art exhibit that explores the influence of Hartley’s work on current artists, including Eric Aho, who visited Stoneham last February to cut ice and recreate a famous Hartley painting in real time. At an earlier date he spent time with the Barkers to scout approximate locations of where Hartley painted.
Eric Aho talks about his painting, The Source, and its relationship to the Hartley drawing to the right of the the painting.
Hartley’s famous painting of Stoneham, Ice Hole, lives in the New Orleans Art museum. Much or Maine’s harvested ice ended up down there for export around the world. What strikes me about this painting is that Hartley exaggerates a feeling that many of us feel on Keewaydin. The Mountains feel so close to us.
