What's Happening at Norris?
On May 19th, the Norris Academy team will be hosting an all day event for our learners, celebrating their efforts and successes during the school year. Activities will include: ziplining, football, volleyball, hiking, swimming (weather permitting), kayaking/canoeing, water balloons, lawn games, tabletop games, and a pizza party for lunch!
*Please make sure learners dress appropriately for the outdoor activities and bring something to swim in or an extra set of clothes in case they get wet.
During the day, we will also be holding a raffle as an incentive for learners to complete their diagnostics. Learners will receive 1 raffle ticket for increasing their score in ELA and 1 raffle ticket for increasing their score in math. If learners increase scores in both subjects they will earn an additional raffle ticket (3 total). Raffle prizes include Fear the Deer (Milwaukee Bucks) banner flags, Norris swag, Milwaukee Brewers items, and much more.

June's Journal
We have reached the final weeks of the school year! May 26th is right around the corner. I have enjoyed working with your students this school year, they have taught me so much! For those not returning to us in the fall, it has been a pleasure working with you and I wish you all the best. For those returning, I look forward to seeing you back on September 1st and hope you enjoy your summer.

ELA: Learners have been researching environmental issues and writing multiple paragraph essays. Some learners have focused on the history of plastic production and the impact it has on the environment and recording their findings in Google Slide presentations. Learners are also exploring what makes a source credible and relevant by looking into the author's purpose, bias, and level of expertise. As the school year is coming to an end, learners are reviewing academic vocabulary, reading comprehension skills, and writing skills, specifically the parts of a paragraph. Learners are enjoying playing word games, solving riddles, and designing some of their own online games.
Mathematics: While the end of the year was fast approaching last month, this month, it's even closer! In the Land of Algebraia, we are winding down the year and trying to finish up our math courses as much as possible. As was similar to last month, some learners are working on end-of-course projects on topics of interest, connecting the topics to math. Some topics selected by learners have been connecting math to: Clothing, Dnd, and Low Frequency Oscillations (thanks Nick for that fun topic : ) ).
Science: As we wrap up the academic year all Science Labs are working on their final pathways. Biology Learners are studying DNA (transcription & translation) and Genetics. Earth/Space learners are investigating Climate Change and Feedback Loops. Chemistry learners are exploring Ocean Acidification and Atmospheric Chemistry. All science learners also recently participated in the April week-of-service opportunity which involved picking up litter around Norris. We had an awesome time exploring the campus on the UTV while we looked for trash and helped to beautify the grounds.
Social Studies: In Social Studies the Government lab is exploring the tension between Civil Liberties and Civil Rights. They are looking at cases that have gone through the Supreme Court and discussing which category they fall into. U.S. History labs are going through Westward Expansion learning about how the settlers moved from the East Coast to the West, the way Plains Indians lived, and how the Railroad Industry had a big impact on how we live today. Econ lab just wrapped up units on Interest Rates and Taxes, learning how they impact our government spending. Each lab has had some very interesting and engaging discussions around their respective topics.
Electives: There have been some changes with electives! Every week there is a new topic for learners, giving them the opportunity to gain new skills and participate in interactive activities or projects. Learners have prevailed through nutrition, created business cards and album covers for graphic design, and have become wizards in navigating digital art apps. Even as the end of the trimester nears there is still lots to look forward to!

ELA: Learners are currently working on completing their last diagnostic of the trimester.
Mathematics: All learners have started their last wave of Math Diagnostics and are eager to increase their scores based on skills they have learned throughout the year!
Science: Learners are currently working on solving design challenges: building paper structures to hold heavy items, using potential and kinetic energy to build multi level rollercoasters, designing bottle rockets for distance, and recreating wind turbines to keep birds from flying into them.
Social Studies: We are focusing on geography and learning about the North and South Poles by reading about expeditions, animal life, and tools used to navigate the tundra!
