Stay Fit under a Stressful Lifestyle

Everyone is familiar with stress. We all experience it in different forms and levels every day. Stress in small doses is actually not a bad thing. When stress becomes so great that it affects our physical or mental health that is when stress becomes a problem. Stress can damage your body as well as your mind. People react to stress differently. We all tolerate different levels of stress. The best treatment for stress is to avoid getting into situations that are beyond your ability to cope. This is not always possible because stress often comes from outside sources that are beyond your control. We can’t completely avoid stress, but we can find ways to reduce stress and stay fit at the same time.

Ways to stay healthy and fit during stressful times

Many people have the tendency to put on weight during stressful times. Some people think that a strenuous work day is a replacement for exercise. But feeling physically and mentally exhausted at the end of the day is not a workout.

Do you want to exercise, but find that you just don’t have enough time to go to the gym? It’s easy to bring exercise into your life simply by moving more. Skip the elevator and take the stairs instead. Go for a brisk walk during lunch break. Park further away and force yourself to walk a little more before you get to your desired destination. Do a do a few push-ups every once in a while to keep your blood moving and slowly build some muscle. Doing active housework or playing actively with your children can be a form of exercise as well.

Another way to reduce stress is practicing relaxation techniques. Some popular relaxation techniques include yoga, journaling, and laughter.

When stressed, many people tend to overeat, and crave foods that are high in sugar, salt, and fat. You can really help yourself by switching to more healthy snacks. Try edamame, carrot sticks, sunflower seeds, or whole wheat crackers. Rather than popping open a soda can which is packed with empty calories and sugar, pick water.

Another reason stressed people tend to gain weight is that they choose fast food after a busy day at the office. Some people may not have time or energy to come home and cook something from scratch. But home cooked meals are usually your best choice. Besides, preparing your own meals can save lots of money, which can reduce your stress level by eliminating financial strain.

Turn off the TV. Rather than just staring at the tube watching one advertising agency after another trying to sell you their creative designs that will probably cause you even more stress, see if you can unwind with some relaxing music.

Sit down and evaluate your life. You don’t have to do everything and be superman or superwoman. As actress Lily Tomlin puts it, “For fast-acting relief, try slowing down.”

Once you start including some or all of these simple ways into your life, staying fit when stressed should be less challenging. And, best of all, you can experience less stress and better health in the process.
