Spartan Spotlight
November 2019
Hello Spartan Families,
We have officially completed the first quarter of the 2019-2020 school year and what a quarter it was. We have completed many of our fall activities and will be transitioning into the winter activities throughout the month of November. A bright spot was our cross-country team. They won the EDC conference with a great team performance. It was a wet, cold and windy day so there were no personal records. They did however score a team best for the season.
The big highlight for October was the installation of our new turf. The football team is officially undefeated on the new surface and we look forward to many more activities on this new surface. We do need to thank all of those that donated to make this all possible.
Let me highlight some of our November activities. We start with our theater department’s presentation of “The Spelling Bee”. This will be presented November 21 thru the 24th. Get your tickets now. Mr. Gillen, along with the rest of his staff and students always present a good show.
Yes, it was a great first quarter at North High School and we aren’t going to slow down just yet. Take a look and mark your calendar for those events you want to attend. Thanks for your support and we look forward to seeing you at one of our many activities.
Sincerely,
Mark Blanshan
Assistant Principal
1st Quarter Report Cards
First quart report cards are now in PowerSchool for parents and students to view or print.
Starting this year, Fargo Public Schools will store report cards in PowerSchool. These electronic records have the same effect as the original record according to ND School record retention law.
There are numerous advantages to storing report cards in PowerSchool over a traditional copy. The electronic version is secure and confidential, easily accessed and shared, environmentally friendly, can continually be updated, and is permanently archived.
1. Secure and confidential: PowerSchool security ensures confidential access by assigned role. Parents and guardians can only see their students’ records.
2. Easily accessible: Students, parents, and approved staff will be able to view report cards starting Fall 2019.
3. Go Green: Parents and students can now log into PowerSchool to view and/or print their report card once they are stored. This will reduce the amount of time needed for staff to print, organize, and distribute ` the reports to students and save a significant amount of paper per grading term.
Winter Co-Curricular Meeting

Cap & Gown Orders
Attention all graduating seniors! There will be a senior class meeting on Monday, November 18 in the theater at 1:30 p.m. Jostens will be here to distribute packets to the senior class for ordering your graduation cap and gown. The packets will also include order information for graduation announcements and specialty items. All orders must be completed and returned to North High by Friday, November 22 to avoid a late charge. Jostens will be set up in the English Team Center to collect the orders.
Four Year Academic Plans
Parents/guardians and students can request to meet with a school counselor annually to review, discuss, and revise four-year academic plans for graduation. Families can call the North High counseling office, 446-2412, for an appointment, or students can come to the counseling office to set up a time. FPS school counselors visit classrooms several times during grades 8-12, to develop and revise academic plans. Each year at FNH, students update their 4-year plan during course registration in February.
The first visit occurs during the spring of 8th grade, when all students create their first high school four-year academic plan in the computer program called RUReadyND. After that, students are encouraged to maintain and update the data in their plans.
In February, at registration class visits, students in grades 9-11 are given the resources to count credits, rework their academic plans and establish course work for the following year. During this class visit, students meet individually with their counselors.
One final credit count and review of the academic plan is completed in September of 12th grade. All seniors fill out a Graduation Application document with their counselors. This document is a final academic plan, detailing how all credits will be completed before graduation in the spring. Parents/guardians and students receive copies of the form, and the original copy is held by each student’s counselor for school reference.
Whenever a student or parent/guardian initiates an inquiry about credits earned, graduation status, or course selection, counselors are eager to discuss academic planning options.
WorkKeys Testing
Seniors may register with Hannalee Shaw in the counseling center to take or retake the ACT WorkKeys test (internet version) at North High. Cost to students is $12.00 or more per test. If students are hoping to qualify for the ND Career and Technical Scholarship, they will need to achieve a score of at least 5 on each of the following WorkKeys tests: Workplace Information, Applied Math, and Graphic Literacy. More information regarding the test dates will be available soon. Students will also need to meet additional requirements in order to qualify for this scholarship. Students should stop by the Counseling Center with any questions.
ND Scholars Program
The North Dakota Scholars Program, a merit-based scholarship, provides approximately 40 to 45 new freshmen scholarships to North Dakota's best and brightest high school graduates to encourage them to remain in North Dakota for college. The North Dakota Scholars Scholarship is a full tuition scholarship for students attending North Dakota's public and tribal colleges and a tuition scholarship equal to NDSU/UND's tuition for students attending North Dakota's private institutions.
· Amount: The amount of the scholarship is equal to the tuition rate charged at the scholar's institution, not to exceed the highest regular resident undergraduate tuition rate in the North Dakota University System. Scholars may receive the award for nor more than eight semesters or twelve quarters of full-time undergraduate study, or until the attainment of a baccalaureate degree, whichever occurs first. Stipends may be awarded in an amount not to exceed two thousand dollars annually. Scholarships and stipends, if awarded, will be sent directly to the institution the student is attending.
· Who is eligible for consideration: High school students who score at or above the ninety-fifth percentile among those who took the ACT prior to July 1st in the calendar year preceding the individual's enrollment in college will be considered for the award. Students will be awarded in descending rank order until available funds are expended or until the pool of applicants has been exhausted.
· How to apply: Take the ACT Assessment prior to July 1 in the calendar year preceding the student's full-time enrollment in college. No separate application is required.

The Great North Pole Collaboration
The Great North Pole is a local non-profit that works with community partnerships to help children and families in the counties of Cass & Clay. Letters were sent on November 1, 2019 from North High School to all families regarding The Great North Pole. Please review the letter to determine if you and your family would benefit from services provided by this non-profit organization. If your family would like to participate, please complete and return the form to the North High Counseling Office by November 15. Your information will be forwarded to The Great North Pole for participation. If you have additional questions about the program, you can reach out to your school counselor or the organization directly. This is the third year The Great North Pole has collaborated with North High School.
Open Door
Just a reminder, if you or your family are in need of personal hygiene supplies, household products, food or clothing, the North High School Open Door has a small variety of items. Students and families can access these items by contacting their school counselor. FNH encourages families to consider any needs they might have over school breaks and long weekends and contact the counseling office at 701-446-2412 prior to the break. If you need additional community supports, the counselors are available to help connect you with additional supports to meet your needs.
Attention Junior Parents/Guardians
On March 3, 2020, all juniors in the state of ND will be taking the ACT Plus Writing or the WorkKeys assessment. All juniors will automatically be registered for the ACT Plus Writing. Students wishing to take the WorkKeys instead must inform the counseling center by Tuesday, November 26. Information is provided below to help students decide which test to take.
In addition, counselors or principals are available to answer questions about testing. You may call the counseling center at 446-2412 or the main office at 446-2400. If your student has a case manager, it is recommended you and your student consult with them, as some students may receive accommodations or be exempt from the assessments.
Helpful Information:
· The ACT is accepted as an admissions test for almost all colleges and universities. The state mandated ACT will include the writing portion. Additional information about the ACT Plus Writing is available at www.act.org.
· The WorkKeys assessments are designed to allow students to demonstrate career readiness in the areas of Reading for Information, Applied Math, Graphic Literacy, and Workplace Documents. Students who score well may also be eligible for a National Career Readiness Certificate. Additional information about the WorkKeys is available at http://www.act.org/workkeys/index.html.
· Test scores will become part of the student’s official high school transcript.
· Test scores on the ACT or WorkKeys may fulfill one requirement of the ND Academic or ND Career and Technical Education Scholarship work up to $6,000. For information on the scholarship requirements, please visit https://www.nd.gov/dpi/parentscommunity/academic-and-cte-scholarship. According to ACT, the difficulty of obtaining scholarship qualifying scores is approximately the same for either test.
· North High recommends college bound students to take the ACT test and employment bound students to take the WorkKeys.
E-cigarettes, “Vapes” and JUULS
What are e-cigarettes? Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, include “vapes”, hookah pens or JUULS. They are battery-powered devices that heat an e-liquid sometimes-called “e-juice” that often contains nicotine. They are not proven to be a safer alternative to cigarettes.
Is there difference between using e-cigarettes and JUULing? No JUULS may look different but they are actually a type of e-cigarette. Every JUUL pod contains highly addictive nicotine. The aerosol cloud produced by a JUUL contains many of the same chemicals as other e-cigarettes or regular cigarettes and has the same health risks.
Aren’t e-cigarettes less harmful than tobacco? No. The aerosol inhaled from e-cigarettes is often a mixture of harmful chemicals like nicotine, formaldehyde and acrolein. E-juice and JUUL pods flavored like fruit or other treats carry the same health risks as the unflavored products.
What are the health risks of e-cigarettes? E-cigarettes contain chemicals that can cause irreversible lung damage and alter teen brains. The nicotine is highly addictive and exposure during adolescence can harm the developing brain. Youth who use e-cigarettes are more likely to go on to use traditional cigarettes.
Can e-cigarettes help someone quit? No e-cigarette has been found to be safe and effective to help people quit smoking. No e-cigarette or vaping device has been FDA approved to use for cessation.
If you know someone who wants to quit smoking they can all 1-800 QUIT NOW (1-800-784-8669). If you have more questions, about e-cigarettes or vaping call Melissa at 701-476-4083 at Fargo Cass Public Health.

Written Notification of School Accountability Report
Dear Parent/Guardian,
North Dakota has launched a new dashboard designed to help communities across the state access important information about K-12 districts and schools. Insights features easy-to-read reports on multiple measures of school success, including:
· Test Scores
· Graduation Rates
· English Learner Progress
· Student Engagement
· State Accountability
Transparency to the Public
North Dakota is committed to informing communities about how well our schools are doing. North Dakota’s future success depends on tapping into the potential of all students, so they graduate choice ready with the knowledge, skills, and disposition to be successful.
State education departments are required to annually create an accountability report for every public school in the state. The school accountability reports outline how schools are performing on the accountability elements North Dakota selected within its ESSA plan.
How is our School Doing?
To find out more information about our School Accountability Report, visit the dashboard at Insights.nd.gov, select “Find My School”, and search alphabetically for our school. The school accountability report is posted under the Dashboard heading.
Please note, the data made available to the public masks or hides data for groups with 10 or fewer students to protect confidential information about individual students. Therefore, if data is not available to less than 10 students, it will say “no data available”.
Family Engagement
We have strong plans for working to improve the educational programs at our school. We would like you and your child(ren) to continue to be active participants in our educational system. Please help support our high expectations for student achievement by participating in the school educational initiatives, offering input and support in our endeavors to raise student achievement, or volunteering at the school. Meeting our school’s goals will take a united effort, and I look forward to working with our families to ensure success for each student.
Continuous Improvement
All schools engage in continuous improvement for general support; therefore, our school has completed a continuous improvement plan through Cognia (formerly AdvancED).
As part of the overall school improvement plan, a strategy map is generated for each school. Our strategy map, outlining our key school improvement initiatives, is available on the Insights Dashboard.

Inclement Weather
If school is in session, and a parent decides that a student should remain at home due to weather conditions, that decision will be respected by the school. Parents should use their own judgment in determining if the weather is suitable for their children to make the journey to school. It is always up to parents to make the final decision about whether or not to send their student to school if they believe weather conditions present a safety issue. The absence for the day would be considered an excused absence.
If school is called off, parents will be contacted via the automated phone, email and text system based on the contact information supplied to the school office(s). Parents are encouraged to update contact information with the school on a regular basis so we have up to date contact information. This can be done through PowerSchool or by calling the school office. School cancellation information will also be broadcasted via local media, and will be posted across our website and social media sites (Facebook and Twitter).
If weather or a situation develops during the day, and it is determined that an early dismissal is in the best interest of the students, parents will be contacted via the automated phone, email and text system based on the contact information supplied to the school office(s). Parents are encouraged to update contact information with the school on a regular basis so we have up to date contact information. This can be done through PowerSchool or by calling the school office. School closure information will also be broadcasted via local media, and the information will be posted on our website and social media sites (Facebook and Twitter).
On mornings when weather conditions warrant additional time for students and staff to get to school, a two hour delay will be used. On these days, North High will begin school at 10:00 A.M. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays and students will report to their period three class. On Wednesdays, we will start with period two at 10:00 a.m. Buses will run later than the normal arrival time. Energy saver bus riders can add two hours to the scheduled times printed and expect the bus to be at the specified stops two hours after the printed times. The early run of these energy saver routes will not run.
Homework Hotline
North High has a Homework Hotline for homework requests for students missing more than two days of school. Steps to complete a request are listed below:
1. Call the Homework Hotline at 701-446-2712.
2. Leave a message with the following information:

After School Reminder
We ask that parents make transportation arrangements for students who don’t ride the bus or have their own transportation to be picked up as close to 3:45 P.M. as possible. We lock all doors to the locker bays and academic wings at 4:00 p.m. every day. After 4:00 p.m. students will not be allowed to enter these areas.
Students are asked to wait in the foyer doors to be picked up and not be hanging around in the building after 4:00 p.m. unless they are involved in an after school activity.
Student Messages
During the school day we will call your student to the office for a message only in an emergency situation. We ask that you please communicate with your student any information they may need for the day, prior to coming to school. (Ex: transportation, appointments, lunch money, etc.) Thank you.
Fee Waivers
If a student is unable to participate in an activity requiring a fee, waivers or other resources are often available to assist. The typical guideline used for eligibility is qualifying for free or reduced lunch. Students are encouraged to visit with their counselor if they may qualify or need any assistance.
Attendance
Students are expected to be in their classes every day, except in the case of illness, school related activities, family emergency, or religious observance. It is the parents’ responsibility to ensure that their children are in school unless a valid reason for absence exists. The Attendance Office asks that a student’s absence be reported by 9:00 a.m. If a student is not accounted for they will be recorded as truant. Please review the attendance policies found in our on-line student handbook. The Attendance Office may be reached by calling 446-2410 or 446-2411.
