August 30, 2021
Dear Southwood Glen Families,
We want your child to be as successful as possible at school. Success in school is not just about reading and math. It is also about knowing how to learn and how to get along with others. We will be using the Second Step program in your child’s classroom (Kindergarten through grade 5) to teach these critical skills.
The Second Step program teaches skills in the following four areas:
Skills for Learning: Students gain skills to help themselves learn, including how to focus their attention, listen carefully, and be assertive when asking for help with schoolwork.
Empathy: Students learn to identify and understand their own and others’ feelings. Students also learn how to take another’s perspective and how to show compassion.
Emotion Management: Students learn specific skills for calming down when experiencing strong feelings, such as anxiety or anger.
Problem Solving: Students learn a process for solving problems with others in a positive way.
Your child will be learning a lot this year—and he or she will need your help! Throughout the year, your child may be bringing home Home Links that go with several of the Second Step lessons. Home Links are simple, fun activities for you and your child to complete together. They are a great way for you to understand what your child is learning and for your child to show you what he or she knows.
If you have any questions about the Second Step program, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher or myself for more information. Thank you for supporting your child in learning the skills that lead to success in school and in life.
Yours in education,
Bridget Mowbray

BOARD OF EDUCATION RECAP & MASKING CHANGE
At all elementary buildings and for 6th grade students at Forest Park, students are currently required to wear masks since the Community Burden Rate for Franklin is currently in the red. For grades 7 through 12, students are ‘recommended’ to wear masks. Franklin Public Schools will be releasing a dashboard weekly (on Fridays) to share the newest case rate information and any impact this has for masking for the following week. You can always find the dashboard and any updates on our Communications Hub here
4K IMPORTANT INFORMATION
In 4K, we begin the school year with Getting to Know You Days, in which each 4K child, along with one parent, will be invited for a 15-20 minute time slot to come to visit their classroom, drop off supplies, meet their teacher, and of course, answer any questions you or your child may have! 4K students will NOT need to attend the Open House Meet the Teacher Night on August 25th. This year, our Getting to Know You Days are Wednesday, September 1st, Thursday, September 2nd, and Friday, September 3rd from 8 am-4 pm. You should have received communication from your child’s teacher on how to sign your child up for a Getting to Know You Conference.
At this time, all visitors into the school building are required to wear a mask whether you are vaccinated or not, so please plan to bring masks for you and your family. If there are any other changes to the district protocols that would impact the Getting to Know You Days, your teacher will be in touch with additional details and next steps.
As a reminder, the first day for all 4K students is Tuesday, September 7th
ATTENTION 4K & KINDERGARTEN PARENTS REGARDING BUS TRANSPORTATION HOME
If parents would like to designate a person other than themselves, they can send an email to Tricia.Geiger@franklin.k12.wi.us.
In regards to same-day notification (this should only be done for emergencies), please call First Student Busing at 414-422-2020 so they can pass along the information to the bus driver.
KIDS CLUB ANNOUNCEMENTS
Many families are enrolled in our before and after school care through KIDS CLUB, under the Community & Recreation Department. Since Kids Club operates within Franklin Public Schools, we will be following the same masking and safety protocols as the schools. Here are some brief notes about what you can expect when dropping off or picking up your child from Kids Club:
Parents may not enter the building and we will use the same “walkie talkie” protocol that we utilized last year. More communication about this regarding how to use the walkie to call into the building will be coming to families soon.
Per the district masking protocols, children need to be masked to enter the elementary building and our staff is not able to help children put on their masks. Please see that your child is properly masked before entering the building.
STUDENT MEDICATIONS FOR 2021-2022
All medication can then be dropped off at school in its original container along with this form. Please feel free to drop off medication in the office.
FORMS DUE TO OFFICE
Just a reminder that if you have any forms such as your child’s birth certificate, proof of residency or immunization records that need to be turned in, feel free to stop by the office prior to the start of school to drop those off. Please call first 414-761-1181 to ensure that a staff member is available.
NEW SPEAK UP SPEAK OUT FORM
The District has joined “Speak Up Speak Out Wisconsin” for threat or incident reporting. This takes the place of our previous “StopIt” reporting form. Click on this link to view the new form. You will notice as you start typing the name of your school, the choices for schools narrows so you can select your school. By selecting your school, this report goes to the principal or local law enforcement when needed. The video linked below gives a good overview of how “Speak Up Speak Out Wisconsin” works and is good to review with your family.
Going forward, we will have a graphic for Speak Up Speak Out Wisconsin at the bottom of each newsletter that you can click on for quick access to report incidents if needed. You can also add the Speak Up Speak Out App on your phone for quick reporting by utilizing these links: iOS | Android
