College GO Week!

SMS is celebrating College GO Week next week! Learn More Indiana wants all Indiana students to spend time this week thinking about future education plans. All students need some training beyond high school - vocational school, technical certifications, military training, or college! Join in on the state-wide celebration by participating each of our special days next week:

Monday: "Show Me the Money" - Wear green and be ready to learn about financial aid and saving for college.

Tuesday: "College Story Day/Staff Career Trivia Day" - Learn about how teachers selected their college paths and what teachers wanted to be when they were kids!

Wednesday: "Dress for Success" - Dress for an interview and visit our photo booth for a professional head shot.

Thursday: "Gear Up for College" - Wear college gear or colors.

Friday: "Hats Off to You" - Wear a hat to celebrate the incredible college paths available at SHS and beyond!

Conference Prep Starts NOW

SMS will hold two nights of Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences on Thursday, October 19th and Tuesday, October 24th. The first night will be 'by appointment' and the second night will be a 'drop in' event. More information about conferences will be shared with parents and students in next week's Scoop. Regardless of the way parents/guardians choose to participate, ALL students will create a Performance Portfolio to share on conference night.

Our portfolios will be created using Google Sites. This will allow us to share the portfolios with parents, friends, teachers, and potential future employers! Our websites must be created on our MacBooks (sharing the carts), therefore we will be on a strict timeline to complete the portfolios in time for conferences. Our plan is outlined below.

Capture a good headshot. Your portfolio will include your picture. How do you want to portray yourself as a learner? Your headshot must be you (not a cartoon or a celebrity). What look do you want? Consider having someone take your picture with your iPad. Put your picture into Drive so it is ready for you to open your site next week. Also, start thinking about your About Me plan. What do you want to share about yourself on your main page? A paragraph? A video? What do you want your readers to know about you?

Watch the Portfolio Slideshow in 8 SH, 7 core, or 6 Skills class. The slide show will be posted on our Canvas community page. Open your Google Site, add your head shot, select your theme and your banner.

Create the rest of the 'shell' of your site. Add a page for each of the courses you have on your schedule. Add your About Me information. Whether you wrote a paragraph or made a movie, make sure it gets to your site!

Add an artifact and reflection from each class to your site. Your classroom teachers will organize this and share the Mac carts to help you get this done.

Your Performance Portfolio will need to be completed by the start of our conferences the week after break!

Picture Day Tuesday

Picture Day is Tuesday, September 26th! Everybody will be called to the Great Room by homeroom that morning. If you want to purchase a picture package, pick one of the three options that were shared in last week's Scoop. Even if you don't want to buy pictures, we need you to sit for a photo because these are our yearbook photos!

  • Complete the order form and return it to the photographer with money on picture day.
  • Order online via the Lifetouch link on the main page of the SMS website. The link will be available until the day after picture day.
  • Order nothing now and wait and see. Students that do not order packages will get a small proof set with info about late ordering through the company,

Picture Retake Day is Thursday, November 16th for any student that is absent on September 26th. SMS Yearbooks will be available for sale in May.

NWEA Data Conferences

All SMS students and teachers will participate in NWEA data conferences between now and fall break. Students will get their first look at their results from last week's testing. Performance in Math, Reading, and Language Conventions, national and school comparisons, and strengths and areas of targeted improvement will be discussed. Students will annotate a data sheet that will be shared with parents on conference night!

Coming Down the Home Stretch!

We are two weeks away from the end of the first grading period. Quarter 1 ends on Friday, October 6th. Make sure your academic record is solid. Any work that needs to be completed? Anything that hasn't been turned in yet?

Teachers will finalize grades and we'll create report cards right after Fall Break. Report cards will be published Wednesday, October 18th. Basketball and cheer tryouts begin the week of October 23rd. Archery starts up soon, too. Don't let your grades get in the way of any of your club or sports dreams. GIT 'R DONE!!!
