Key Updates
Second Semester Learning Option Change Requests
Learning Option Change Requests Forms for students in grades K-5th grade will be available for families on Dec. 30. Each K - 5th grade school will have a link on their home school webpage where families can communicate their desire for next semester.
If you are an traditional IN-PERSON family or a fully VIRTUAL family this is your opportunity to let us know how you would like to end the school year.
For example, if you would like your student to return to traditional IN-PERSON instruction for the remainder of the school year, you would fill out the Learning Option Change Request Form and select “traditional IN-PERSON”. If you are a traditional IN-PERSON family who would like to move to fully VIRTUAL for the remainder of the school year, you would select “fully VIRTUAL”.
Families considering remaining/moving to fully VIRTUAL for the remainder of the school year, should be aware of four factors:
Indiana schools are required by state and federal legislation to administer assessments, such as WIDA, ILEARN, IREAD, and IAM. These statewide assessments may not be given to students remotely, they must be taken in-person at school. Your student will be required to attend school on designated days to take their assessments. 2021 Assessment Window Dates.
Second semester placements for K-5th graders will begin January 19th. Students in the Virtual Learning Academy (VLA) will receive a schedule from their VIRTUAL teacher(s). Choosing to move to the VLA for the remainder of the 20-21 means you are agreeing that your student will follow the schedule provided by your teacher(s) and will log into Zoom for instruction provided by teachers each day during the scheduled times.
When the Learning Option Change Request window closes, staffing changes will be made to support the high volume of requests. Due to these staffing changes, it is possible that your student may be assigned to a new Virtual teacher for the second semester.
This is the last window to request a learning option change. There will not be another opportunity to communicate a change. Students will finish the school year in this option.
Learning Option Change Request Forms for students in grades K-5th will open Dec. 30 and close Jan. 8th, 2021, at 3PM. Second semester schedules will start Jan. 19, 2021.
If you have a child in secondary:
All students in grades 6th - 12th will remain 100% VIRTUAL until at least Friday, February 12th with a tentative IN-PERSON HYBRID return on Wednesday, February 17th. Learning Option Change Requests Forms for students in grades 6th-8th grade will open Jan. 15 and close Jan. 29, 2021, at 4PM.

School Schedule - we are entering our final week of school before Winter Break begins. It is extremely important for all students to attend school this week and complete all assigned activities. This is their last opportunity to get assignments turned in before report cards are completed.
Report Cards - report cards will be uploaded to ParentVue on December 18th. This means you will be able to ParentVue for your child's grades for quarter 2 as well as the semester. Please contact the front office if you need assistance logging in.
Message from our Superintendent - Per Dr. Hanson's recent message - based on our district COVID data and the impact that COVID cases are having on staffing, all MSD Warren K-12 students will remain virtual through at least January 15. A public board work session is scheduled for Monday, December 14 at 6 PM to review and discuss plans for after January 15. Communication of any decisions will be shared with our staff and families as soon as possible.

Phonological and Phonemic Awareness
Phonological awareness is a broad skill that includes identifying and manipulating units of oral language – parts such as words, syllables, and onsets and rimes. Children who have phonological awareness are able to identify and make oral rhymes, can clap out the number of syllables in a word, and can recognize words with the same initial sounds like 'money' and 'mother.'
Phonemic awareness refers to the specific ability to focus on and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words. Phonemes are the smallest units comprising spoken language. Phonemes combine to form syllables and words. For example, the word 'mat' has three phonemes: /m/ /a/ /t/. There are 44 phonemes in the English language, including sounds represented by letter combinations such as /th/. Acquiring phonemic awareness is important because it is the foundation for spelling and word recognition skills. Phonemic awareness is one of the best predictors of how well children will learn to read during the first two years of school instruction.
Students at risk for reading difficulty often have lower levels of phonological awareness and phonemic awareness than do their classmates. The good news is that phonemic awareness and phonological awareness can be developed through a number of activities.
Textbook Rental Information
FYI. I received FY21 Textbook Rental data on Friday, October 2nd. All full pay student amounts have been loaded to parent accounts, on their Textbook Rental parent portal. The portal website is www.k12paymentcenter.com. Once these were loaded, I followed up with an email to these parents about the portal and amounts. With that said, you may begin seeing parents bring in payment for TBR or ask to complete a TBR application for assistance. If payment is made, please send me your receipt books so I can update their portal. If they wish to complete an application for assistance, they can also do this at www.lunchapplication.com.
As for paper invoices, Technology Dept is still working on these to be generated and mailed out asap. TBR due date is 11/30/2020. If parents wish to request for an extension, please have them email me this request, so I can have this in writing.
If you can include any of this information on your school newsletter, that would be greatly appreciated.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Car Rider Information
We have made a slight change to the car rider procedure for this year. For both Pick up and Drop off, the car rider line will utilize two lanes to reduce congestion. See map below for details.
WHO ARE WE?
At Brookview Elementary school, we strive to develop and enrich students to their full potential. One of the ways that we do this is by focusing on critical thinking, content knowledge, collaboration, citizenship, creativity, and resilience.
Teaching and Learning
Teaching and Learning Emphasis
At Brookview Elementary, we want our students to be strong readers! There are 5 major components to reading. I will be sharing information on each of the 5 components of reading over the next several weeks. Let's start with fluency.
What Is Fluency?
Fluency is the ability to read "like you speak." Hudson, Lane, and Pullen define fluency this way: "Reading fluency is made up of at least three key elements: accurate reading of connected text at a conversational rate with appropriate prosody or expression." Non-fluent readers suffer in at least one of these aspects of reading: they make many mistakes, they read slowly, or they don't read with appropriate expression and phrasing.
Many researchers have found that fluency is highly correlated with reading comprehension—that is, when a student reads fluently, that student is likely to comprehend what he or she is reading.
So how do we teach it?
Teacher Modeling
Examples of teacher modeling include:
- Teacher-assisted reading
- Peer-assisted reading
- Audio-assisted reading
Key point: Teacher modeling involves more than just listening to someone else read. Students must be actively involved 100 percent of the time and in a multi-sensory way.
Parents, you play a major role here as well. Allowing your children consistent opportunities to read to you is key. Every night, have your children read to you. This helps your child become a strong reader!

SCHOOL DISTRICT PUBLICATIONS/NEWS MEDIA USE
SCHOOL DISTRICT PUBLICATIONS/NEWS MEDIA USE
The occasion may arise when the school district wants to recognize your child or your child's school. This may include your child's photo, your child's name or your child's work in district publications, newsletters, on school district websites, and in electronic/social media or in staff training videos. We may also want to tell the media (including newspapers, television, and radio) about your child's achievements. We never knowingly release information about a student to anyone who wants to use it for commercial/political purposes. However, we will honor your request to not include your child in these types of recognitions if you notify Mr. Coleman by email that you do not want this type of information released.
