Animal Medical Testing

Animal Testing

Animals are usually tested with medicine or drugs before humans. They primarily inject rats, mice and rabbits. In fact, it is actually the law that drugs and medicines have to get tested on animals before being used by humans.

My Point of View

I believe that animal medical testing is very bad. I believe this since animals have no way to fight back while they are practically getting tortured. Also, they should make something like a dummy that reacts to medicines or drugs in the same way as animals or humans.

Pros

There are many point of views to this controversial issue. For example, people think that it is better to test animals than humans because if something goes wrong, only animals will die and not humans. We share 95% of our genes with a mouse, making them an effective model for the human body. Also, all veterinary research has relied on the use of animal research
"Without animal testing, there will be no new drugs for new or hard-to-treat diseases…" says the Lancet 2004.
"Research using non-human primates has played a major role in improving human and animal health, and this continues to be the case" says Dr. Mike Walbort.
These are some pros for medical animal testing.

Cons

Although animal testing is used for a good reason, many people believe it is bad. They believe that animal testing is very cruel and the animals get practically tortured. They get poisoned, shocked, burned or even killed in experiments. Also, some people just think it doesn't work like a race that has no finish line. I believe that animal testing is cruel and not be used as a way to test drugs or medicines. Amazingly, 92% of the drugs that get passed on animals, fail on humans.

"On the basis of probability theory we would have been better off tossing a coin (on if the medicine worked)." Says Dr. David Salsburg.

"The reason why I am against animal research is because it doesn't work, it has no scientific value and every good scientist knows that."
Says Dr. Robert Mendelsohn, M.D., 1986, Head of the Licensing Board for the State of Illinois.

Summary

To summarize the pros and cons of animal medical testing, the main pro is that testing animals plays a huge role in the health of humans and many people rely on it. The main con is that animal testing simply doesn't work and is very cruel to animals. I believe it is crazy that most of the time all of the experiments don't work but yet scientists are still doing it.

Interests

I found it very interesting that 92% of the time, the drugs or medicines that get passed on animals end up failing for humans. I also find it interesting that we share 95% of our genes with a mouse, that is why we primarily use mice for tests.

End

After my research, I still feel that animal medical testing is very bad and cruel but I have lightened up a little on the subject. There are many reasons why or why not we should test animals on drugs or medicine but I believe that why not has more reasons than why we should.
