VIS Library
December Update
What's Been Going On in the Library
- Social Studies: Classes at 4, 5 and 6 have tried some of the new NYS Social Studies Inquiries to get an idea of what the new standards are like and preview the changes in Social Studies instruction. Fourth has tried NYS Geography and Early Native Americans, Fifth Has tried Complex Societies and Sixth has tried World Religions
- Research: Some areas of focus for the month include Native Americans for multi-age and Natural Disasters for 5th grade. These skill are so important to our students. We can work to modify almost any project to fit our new schedule.
- Literature: Many classes have been in to listen to book talks and have some guidance on finding books that are a good fit. I have been working on different genres with Mrs. Fischer, Mrs. Raby and Mrs. Sheridan's classes. Mrs. Shaw and Mrs. Becker's classes have been in to select books for a character project. Mrs. Boyd's WIN classes were able to participate in a SKYPE author visit with Natalie Llyod, the author of A Snicker of Magic.
SKYPE Author Visit
Mrs. Boyd's WIN classes were able to take advantage of a SKYPE author visit that was set up last spring. Mrs. Boyd is using the book, A Snicker of Magic, as a read aloud. Natalie Lloyd was a gracious guest, who gave our kids some great advice about writing.
Chromebooks
The 15 Chromebooks added to the library this year, have been used consistently. Individuals, small groups and classes have been able to take advantage of them.
READING
If you wonder if our students are reading, the answer is YES. It is wonderful to see kids finding books they really enjoy and settling in to read when they are here.
