When the founding fathers were working to pass the Constitution they put aside their issues to make sure America had a functioning government. Before the ink was dry on the Constitution many of those problems re-emerged. Soon politicians were lined up behind either Alexander Hamilton (Federalist) or Thomas Jefferson (Democratic-Republican).

George Washington
First President of the United States of America. Although his policies were clearly Federalist he refused to take political sides.
John Adams
First Vice-President. He was a federalist.
James Madison
Although he's considered the father of the Constitution he became a democratic-republican.
