PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Today, we had our first Cougar Pride Assembly and it was a wonderful opportunity to bring everyone together and recognize some outstanding students. Each month we have a Cougar Pride Trait that we emphasis in the classroom and through our Mid-Week Messages. During the month of September, we focused on respect. On Wednesdays, students listened to our PAWS & Pride messages, offering tips on how to be respectful in the classroom and on the playground. Today, we recognized one student from each classroom who went above and beyond our expectations. What a wonderful thing to celebrate!

During the month of October, we will focus on developing our Growth Mindset. Growth Mindset is a concept that was developed by Carol Dweck from Stanford University. It is a belief that a person's abilities and intelligences can be developed through practice, hard work, dedication, and motivation. Her research has shown that students with a Growth Mindset are more likely to:

  • Learn from their mistakes
  • Seek feedback
  • Be motivated to succeed
  • Put forth more effort
  • Take challenges head on
  • Take risks
  • Learn more & learn faster

At the bottom of this newsletter I've included a short information sheet about Growth Mindset and what you can do at home to help your child develop this important quality. During the month of October, I'll continue to provide more information to extend your child's learning from classroom to your home. I hope you'll find it to be a valuable resource.

MONSTER DASH WALK-A-THON

The Monster Dash Walk-a-Thon will be held on Saturday, October 19th, from 9am-3pm. This fun, whole school event is the biggest fundraiser for the Alta Vista Home and School Club (AVHSC). Your participation and generous donations help fund our amazing enrichment programs at Alta Vista! Students collect pledges and walk laps.

Bring your chairs and popups. The kids can walk laps or enjoy the DJ, Haunted Hangout, Face Painting, Pumpkin Decorating, Crazy Hair, and other fun activities. We'll also have BBQ and concessions for sale.

Save the date for this fun family-friendly event! Stay all day or come and go throughout the day. Have to play a sport that day? No problem. Just make sure to let us know before you check out and you can earn a total of 10 laps for sports credit.

PROJECT CORNERSTONE CORNER

Our terrific ABC readers have started the school year off by sharing the book Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon in our classrooms. We've included a brief flyer with information about the book and its message about the importance of caring adults to help empower our children. Thank you to our ABC readers for sharing this story with our students.
