PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE by Kayla Bell
Dear Families,
Family Night is fast approaching!! We hope that you can join us on Thursday, November 17 from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. This evening is designed to support families in their understanding of the common core math standards and our Eureka Math program. When families arrive, you will pick up a Passport of Learning that has a menu of math activities for you to choose from. There will be three activities per grade level and a few other challenge activities around the school. You are not limited to your own grade level. The intent is for you to explore the various concepts that are introduced from grades K-5, and then see how students begin to conceptualize their own math understanding. The math activities will take place in classrooms, and grade level pod areas and in the library.
Our Family Night is also an activity night for families as well. Families are welcome to participate in PE activities. You will be able to see the connection between the activities and the grade level learning targets.
You are encouraged to collect your passport stamps throughout the evening. Students are encouraged to return passports to their teacher either that night or Friday morning. The grade level that returns the most passports will earn a popcorn party for their participation.
The agenda for the evening is listed below. We hope you can join us.
5:30 to 6:15 pm
- K-2 grades in the classrooms areas
- 3-5 grades invited to participate in the PE activities
6:15 to 7:00 pm
- K-2 invited to participate in the PE activities
- 3-5 in the classrooms areas
Enjoy the weekend,
Kayla

COUNSELOR'S CORNER by Vicki Charbonneau
In September, Nancy Ryles staff began implementing Kelso’s Wheel of Choices. Students are being taught to differentiate between minor and major problems that they can solve and those that are potentially serious and dangerous.
Our goal is to teach students several positive ways to deal with these minor conflict situations. To do this we are going to ask that they try two of the following ideas or “choices” when they have a small problem with a peer(s) before asking for adult help:
1. Go to another game or activity.
2. Respectfully talk it over and listen to each other.
3. Walk away from the problem.
4. Ignore the problem behavior.
5. Tell the person to stop the problem behavior.
6. Apologize.
7. Make a deal or compromise.
8. Wait to cool off.
9. Share and take turns.
By using this plan, we believe that our students will develop effective problem-solving skills that they can use again and again. It will help them to deal with conflict in a positive manner and to make appropriate decisions. Knowing what to do will help reduce the stress and number of conflicts they have at school and in their neighborhood. We encourage you to become familiar with this program and use it in your home. By working together, we can develop a healthy life skill for young people to use at school and at home.

So if you want to know who won, you'll have to stop in for some great food!
DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME ENDS NOVEMBER 6
On November 6, we lose an hour and it will be darker earlier in the afternoon. With shorter days this time of year, motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians need to be extra alert to see each other in low light situations.
Improving visibility means improving safety for all road users. Wearing light colors or reflective clothing is one of the simplest things pedestrians and cyclists can to do keep themselves safe.
Here are additional suggestions to help keep you safe while walking and biking:
- Wear bright, reflective clothing and shoes when walking or biking.
- Don’t wear headphones, text or talk on a cell phone while crossing the street.
- Be aware of vehicles around you. Make eye contact before crossing in front of vehicles.
- Don’t assume that cars see you or are going to stop.
- Driving or biking? Expect and slow down for pedestrians in popular walking areas, around schools and parks, and near crosswalks.
When more people walk, bike and take the bus, it makes the route to school safer, less congested and more fun for everyone. Thank you for continuing to walk, bike and use the bus. It’s the Way to Go!
