Kerens HS Paw Prints
Week 1: August 22-26, 2016
Events of the Week!
It was a wonderful 1st week at KHS! As of Thursday morning, KHS enrollment count is at 180 students. Our first day went very smooth due to the hard work of several key staff members. A big shout out to Mrs. Birnbaum, Ms. Foreman, Jordan Mullinnix and our team of paras (Trina Green, Meigien Torres, Debbie Williams, Sherry Paul, and Sherry Morgan) for going the extra mile to ensure all our kids were taken care of.
I had 9 grade-level meetings with all students from Tuesday-Thursday. These small group meetings allowed me the opportunity to informally build relationships with new and returning kids, clearly communicate our vision, mission, and core beliefs, clarify campus-wide expectations, and introduce the new Friday Activity Period procedures. At the conclusion of each meeting, every student took the opportunity to sign up for a variety of activities: Clubs, UIL academics, UIL Solo/Ensemble, STAAR tutorials, Class meetings, and ACE. As the principal of KHS, it excites me to see the kids eager to get involved and take ownership in school pride.
I was able to step into a few classes yesterday and was energized by what I observed. For example, I walked into Mr. Hazelwood’s chemistry class on Wednesday at the beginning of the period. All 24 of his students were seated, taking out their journals and writing a reflection before the tardy bell. It was good to see our students eager to get started and I was pleased to see Mr. Hazelwood setting high expectations for his students. This is just one of the many examples I could share for the week—its a great day to be a Bobcat!
We finish the week with a pep rally at 1:05, a home football game against Leon at 7:30, and a VB tournament in the HS gym on Saturday.
