Topic 8: More Addition and Subtraction
Both Addends Unknown
Topic 8 lessons include word problems where the sum is known but both addends are unknown. Students use objects, draw pictures, and write equations to represent and solve the problems. Through discussion, students see that there is more than one-way o show a number as they connect that these problems have multiple answers, all equally correct. As students record their work, they become more familiar with the structure of an equation with the sum on the left side of the equal sign.
Add and Subtract
Related Facts
Students solve related addition and subtract facts. This lays the groundwork for future work involving the important relationship between addition and subtraction.
Fluently Add and Subtract Within 5
Students solve equations with sums and minuends up to 5 and explain how they solved them. Establishing, through student examples, different ways that the correct answer can be found develops strategies and helps build towards the goal of fluency.
Parts of 10
Missing Parts
Students find different ways to make 10. They solve word problems with 10 and they work to find a missing part of 10 when one part is known. This will help students when they come to use make-10 strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems.
1st Grade Math
Topic 10- Use Models and Strategies to Add Tens and Ones
Add 10 to a Number/ Add Tens and Ones
Make 10 to Add/ Add Two 2-digit Numbers
Students add 2-digit numbers by drawing place-value blocks or using an open number line, and recording the sum.
2nd Grade Math
Topic 10 and 11-Add and Subtract Within 1,000 Using Models and Strategies
Topic 11 focuses on expanding students' understanding of subtraction within 100 to subtract within 1,000, using models and strategies.
Students explain why addition and subtraction strategies work using place value and properties of operations.
Addition Strategies
Add on an Open Number Line: Students add on an open number line. They start at one addend and make jumps to match the hundreds, tens, and ones of the other addend. They also learn that they can make bigger jumps.
Use Place-Value Models to Add: Students use place-value blocks or place-value drawings to represent each addend. They then join the hundreds, the tens, and the ones, regrouping if needed.
Record Partial Sums: Students use place-value models to find and record partial sums. The hundreds are added first, then the tens, then the ones.
Place Value and Partial Sums: Students use the place-value chart to record and add partial sums. Using the partial-sums strategy along with a place-value chart emphasizes the place value of digits.
Subtraction Strategies
Subtract on an Open Number Line: Students subtract on an open number line by adding up or counting back.
Use Place-Value Models to Subtract: Students use place-value blocks or drawings to subtract, with and without regrouping.
Record Partial Sums: Students use place-value models to find and record partial differences. They subtract the hundreds for the hundreds, tens from the tens, and ones from the ones, regrouping as needed. Students learn that they can start with either the hundreds or the ones.
